Harpdog Brown & the Travelin' Blues Show Blues: Thursday, September 8th!

Some people think they are worth a lot of money just because they have it. -Fannie Hurst, writer (1889-1968)

Hello hip-less horatio, it would be great if we could meet in Vancouver when you're here, as well, we'll bring flowers to your bedside on the 14th (we'll try to sneak in some alcoholic beverage as well, but you might need something stronger for the pain, may I suggest cocaine?) let us know what is a good time for you pre-surgery, but I know I am free this coming Monday evening

Also, where in the Okanagan are you again? If you could provide us the address that would be great. We will likely spend one night in Oliver (or what do you recommend as far as a place that has lots of great scenery and wine in the Okanagan?) before moving on to our permanent wedding weekend location in Penticton. We will be driving up early morning on Friday Sep 16th and leaving late afternoon/evening on Monday Sep 19th Those pictures look amazing, it's too bad we aren't able to get out while we're up there with you. Please say hi to Corinne as well, and warn her that the freeloaders are coming soon  Take care and see you soon, VL

BEER AND PLUMS (What a combination...!) by the fire, by the creek Tomorrow (Friday) between 3 and 5? - Who cares?, at our place. ....are just some of the reasons for this get-together No need to reply, just come. Al

After Chloë had gone for her walk on the KVR along the west side of Skaha we both drove up to Spiller shortly before noon. I had six empty wine boxes and she filled them with kindling while I wheelbarrow-ed three loads of firewood to put in her car. Once she had filled all the boxes and carried them up she left for home. I stayed all afternoon, splitting and "muling" until our car was as full as it could possibly be. Very pleased as I had split all the large rounds that I wanted. Will return tomorrow to finish off collecting more kindling and splitting the last of the small logs which remain.

Back home to find Lady Dar and Chloë unloading the wood from Chloë's vehicle. Once I had made myself a mug of java I started to unload our car and estimate that over the last three days I've managed to collect and stack about a cord and a half of wood! Pretty tired by the time I was finished so the hot shower felt wonderfully rejuvenating! Bathed and changed we took of for The Dream Café just after 7:00 pm. We had reservations for dinner followed by Harpdog Brown & The Travelin' Blues Show. The La Frenz Semillon went down very quickly after all the thirsty work of the day so we ordered a 2012 Pentâge Hiatus togo with our meal. I had two appetizers, the Bonzai Meatballs, (Pork Meatballs / Honey Soy Glaze / Green Onion / Sesame Seeds), and a Nicoise Salad, (Cold Smoked Tuna / Nugget Potatoes / Tomato / Green Beans / Radish / Boiled Egg / Tapenade / Dijon Vinaigrette), both extremely delish!

The two hour long sets were simply wonderful. There is good reason why Harpdog has been Canada’s #1 harmonica player two years in a row. His side-men, Jordie Edmonds, on guitar, and  bassist, Pat Darcus, are both extremely, extremely accomplished musicians. Funnily enough, Pat's parents were seated at the table next to ours so we had a chance to chat with them and him when he came by before show started and between sets. Pat's Dad was raised in Penticton but they live in Pitt Meadows now. They were up for the Jazz Festival and Pat's gig just happened to coincide with the weekend they'd be here.

At any rate, another stellar show at the Dream and one which, for me, was a foot-tapping, finger snapping filled evening of double entendre lyrics, authentic, blues from the early 50’s and late 40’s, transporting us with the spell-binding, heart-felt wailing, shrieking at times, moaning of the Harpdog's fantastic harp. A magical evening indeed but when the last set finished at 10:30 pm the htree of us were very sleepy after our busy day of hauling wood and ripe tomatoe pickle making so we were happy to head home to see our kittens and make for our beds.

Barely able to brush and floss, I seemed to catch my second wind when I climbed into bed so started to read Alan Furst's Spies of the Balkans, one of two, (Midnight in Europe is the other), I'd picked up at the Book Shop when we stopped by with Kathleen and Steve, last week. Am very much taken with his writing, his characters, locales and the fascinating time period he explores, pre-WW II Europe. Started Spies as it was written in 2010 while Midnight was published in 2014. Would have read all night but Duke tired me out playing fetch. He amuses us enormously, like a puppy, rahter than a feline. He loves a crumpled ball of paper, treats it like a soccer ball, batting and chasing it all over the living room and into the hallway, to scamper up onto our bed, prize in his mouth, dropping it next to one of our hands, waiting for the signal "Fetch" as we toss it back into the living room and the process repeats itself until we are too weary to continue and turn of our bedside lights, signalling the end of the game! At least for us as he continues to romp in the dark until he finally exhausts himself and comes to sleep at the end of our bed, Etta preferring to snuggle with Chloë in her bedroom.
