Day 12, Post-Op Slammin' Steve's Red Wine Blues: Monday, September 26th!

Half of the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm but the harm does not interest them. -T.S. Eliot, poet (26 Sep 1888-1965)

Hi Raymondo! Delighted to report that I'm to have my staples removed tomorrow and physio is to start soon, as well. Believe I'll be going to a program, (at the Penticton Community Pool & Fitness Centre, a great facility), REACT: "This medically supervised program is for those with mobility, post injury or surgical rehabilitation issues. The program includes 30 minutes of guided group exercise and 30 minutes of independent prescribed movement. A current doctor’s referral and application for is required for participation. Forms are available online or at Reception. Tue & Thu 1:00-2:00 pm.", once I get okay from doctor or physio. Thanks for advice but don't worry, I plan on being very careful about starting to use stationary bike. Will be very convenient once I start as I'll only have to go to our Rumpus Room to use it! Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi P, had a great couple of days with Amos and Pat in SFO, met him at Sausalito after I walked the GG bridge. Can you please ask Corinne to send me his email, I only have fb messenger contact. Keep hiking.

Hi Stefano! This is the address I have for Amos. Glad you enjoyed such a good visit. We met with them a few years ago. Our close friend, David, worked with Pat at the Berkeley Library so another bibliographic connection! Last two times I've been down there I cycled over the Golden Gate. Took BART into San Francisco and started from close to Fisherman's Wharf. All the way to Tiburon, returning by ferry from there. Simply wonderful to get to know that part of the fascinating Bay Area that way. You probably enjoyed better views on foot.

We enjoyed a fabulous dinner at Isshin Sushi Bar, on Front Street, this evening before going to see Snowden. Chloë accompanied me as Lady Dar and Rebekah wanted to see Bridget Jones's Baby, both having seen former earlier. Thought that Oliver Stone did another remarkable job of directing. Had heard him interviewed, a few weeks ago, so it was terrific to actually see what he had been talking about.

Our film was over 30 minutes before theirs so as we were walking out we discovered, as we passed the theatre where Hell or High Water was just starting so we slipped in, without tickets! Only one other person there. Chloë texted Rebekah to let them know what we had done but they decided to walk home as they had already left building by then. At any rate, another extremely powerful film:

In West Texas, divorced father Toby Howard and his ex-con brother Tanner carry out early morning robberies of two branches of the (fictional) Texas Midlands Bank. They plan to commit several small-scale bank robberies over the course of a few days. Though the robberies are well-planned, Tanner's wild nature leads to him taking unnecessary risks, frustrating Toby. It is revealed that their mother has recently died, leaving their ranch in debt due to a reverse mortgage, which, if not paid off in a few days, will result in foreclosure on the property. Toby is determined to pay off the mortgage and, because oil has recently been discovered on the land, he plans to sell the oil rights in order to pay for a comfortable life for his estranged sons. It is also revealed that Tanner's prison sentence resulted from his killing of their abusive father."

Jeff Bridges, (
Marcus Hamilton), plays, and masterfully so, one of two Texas Rangers sent to catch the robbers. Close to retirement he captures the personality of a law enforcement officer who has seen it all yet remains committed, in his quiet, plodding way, to serve "justice", not a clear concept given the background outlined above. More than just a "Shoot 'Em Up" film and well worth seeing!

I'm off to my doctor to have incision staples removed tomorrow. Not back hiking yet but hoping to use stationary bike shortly! Fondestos from Lady Dar and Chloë to you and Kathleen. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Pat, Sounds as though you are continuing to do very well. Great that you are able to get around with just the cane. Walking poles next perhaps. The pool sounds great. The timing sounds similar to what I had - an hour each session, 3 times a week (water/gym exercise) and I found it did me a world of good. I think they put me into the water 3 weeks after surgery. Ray

Dear Patrick, Thank you for confirming your Vancouver Writers Fest shifts as a Box Office volunteer! Please join us for the 2016 Volunteer Orientation for Box Office volunteers on Tuesday evening Oct 11, at  the Revue Stage, 1601 Johnston St, on Granville Island. It is at the est side of the Public Market building across from the Arts Club Granville Island Theatre Stage.
Doors open for volunteer package pick-up at 6:30 pm.
The package will contain your volunteer badge, finalized schedule, job description(s), invitation to our Volunteer Appreciation Party, freebies and pertinent general information about the Festival. If you are eligible for, and submit to, the Volunteer Ticket Lottery, your volunteer package will also contain your complimentary winning ticket. (Your invitation to our volunteer ticket lottery should arrive soon.)

Introductions begin at 7 pm, with an outline of some general information essential to 2016 Festival volunteering. Followed by fantastic Door prizes!
Break-out training sessions for the different volunteer activities/jobs begin no later than 7:20 and we hope to be all done no later than 8:30 pm. A second
break-out session for Box Office volunteers unable to attend on Tuesday evening Oct 11 will be held on Thursday evening Oct 13, here at the Writers Fest offices: Main Floor Festival House, 1398 Cartwright St. 7 to 8:30 pm.

It is essential that all first-time volunteers attend one of the evening training sessions, and it's highly recommended that returning volunteers attend. We have a different ticketing system this year, through Theatre Wire. We'll be using Ipads to process ticket purchase transactions. This will be new to Returning Volunteers as well as first-timers! We want everyone to have as much current information as possible before the Festival begins. With only six days of events, there's no time to get familiar and comfortable with changes on the job once the festival begins. Don't miss out on our light refreshments and fantastic door prizes! We look forward to seeing you there! Kathryn

Hi Kathryn! Sorry we won't have the pleasure of attending either of the Orientation Sessions but plan to pop by, at some point, mid-morning on Monday, October 17th, for iPad ticket briefing! Trust you all goes well with pre-Festival frenzy! Fondestos from Lady Dar. Cheers, Patrizzio!
