Day 16, Post-Op Early Bird Blues: Friday, September 30th!

Racism tends to attract attention when it's flagrant and filled with invective. But like all bigotry, the most potent component of racism is frame-flipping -- positioning the bigot as the actual victim. So the gay do not simply want to marry; they want to convert our children into sin. The Jews do not merely want to be left in peace; they actually are plotting world take-over. And the blacks are not actually victims of American power, but beneficiaries of the war against hard-working whites. This is a respectable, more sensible bigotry, one that does not seek to name-call, preferring instead change the subject and straw man. -Ta-Nehisi Coates, writer and journalist (b. 30 Sep 1975)

More pics of Alex and Sam's shoot Before we know it, July will be here xoxo Hi Tinsel Town! Fabulous snaps, indeed! However, Etta and Duke are concerned about number of pics that are being sent and posted!

Annemarie Bartlome
Dear Corinne, dear Patrick, We have plan..to visit you next september....but we doen't know...how your plans are????? Greatings Cheers Annamaria T...and Rudi R
Patrick James Dunn
Patrick James DunnHello Anna Maria Tremonti and Rudi Rudenheimer! You must have been talking to Nadienka! [Bench 1715 where we had a picnic with Nicolina and Jaxon!] Of course, we are more than delighted to learn of your proposed visit next September. We will be at a wedding in late August so we will certainly be here, waiting for you to arrive and stay with us for as long as your time allows. Fondestos to you both. Cheers!
Up at 7:15 am, first time, really, since I've been home. Immediately walked to garage as I knew kittens would follow. Wanted to make sure that Dope Duke would use the litter box as he had an "accident" last week. Etta is much better about her "toilette" but Duke seems to forget, especially first thing in the morning when he's already started racing around, chasing his crumpled paper "soccer balls!" Must away as I'm going to have a spot of breakfast. Cheers, "More Mobile, if not Richer", Bionic Patrizzio!

Hello Stompin'! Congratulations, of course, on your Magnum Opus! It goes without saying, that you deserve immeasurable, heartfelt thanks for your unbelievable dedication, time and energy. Hip Hip Hooray! For He's a Jolly Good Fellow, indeed! Scrolling through the online version I was transported back in time and almost wished I wasn't retired! Many, many thanks for capturing the life and times of this remarkable institution and its staff!

Trust you are well. We are still enjoying life in Penticton. Busy summer with plenty of visitors. Then on September 14th, at UBC, I had my left hip replaced.
Not sure how long we will be in Vancouver, in early November, but perhaps we can arrange to meet up with Big Al, over the course of our visit, if everyone's busy schedules allow. Let me know what you think and we'll plan accordingly. Fondestos from Lady Dar, (Her lastest nickname since we travelled in India last year with Lynne and Peter Lighthall.), to you both. Cheers, Patrizzio! Pic: Miss Etta. She's not quite as rambunctious as Devil Cat Duke!

Hi Pat,  Thanks for the kind words. I've had some other positive reviews which is gratifying. I'm uncertain if one can actually search by key-word yet. Could you do me a favour? On your computer (not iPad, which I am using) could you go into the text, click on the little looking glass at the bottom right of the screen, type in Stackettes, hit Enter and see if any page numbers come up, which you could click onto to access info about that sensationally popular headline act. Let me know if it works, okay? If so, I can alert others to employ this search strategy.

Sorry to hear about your hip issues, but glad the surgery was successful and that you are becoming anxious to revisit your very active life. Yes, getting together with Al would be fun. Let's try to work something out. Regards to your Lady. Stompin Hi Sherlock! Yes, the search works very nicely so a terrific feature! Unfortunately, you'll now have to publish usage stats on most popular searches! Taxes and library stats indeed! I'll let you both know our travel plans as soon as we decide when we'll hit town in November. Cheers, Watson!

Hi All, It is clear that one major drawback in navigating this voluminous production is the lack of an index. However, Pat Dunn reports that the key-word search strategy I referred to in my earlier dispatch worked when he followed a procedure I suggested. Give it a try.

On your computer (not iPad, which I am currently using myself) go into the text, then click on the little magnifying glass which appears at the bottom of the screen. When a blank bubble pops up, key in what you are looking for - perhaps a person's name (eg. Rothstein) - then hit the Enter button on your keyboard. Using that sample, two page numbers appear, accessing where items involving Sam turn up. Employing this procedure, after you've explored each item which are cited in your own research, hitting the Backspace button will remove it and eventually - by re-clicking on the text itself - the bubble disappears. I hope this will help somewhat. If you have other suggestions I'd appreciate receiving them. Tom

Hi Patrick, Thank you for the letter. So glad to hear that you are on the mend. I left UBC on Wednesday morning, one week after my surgery and two days earlier than expected. I had a rough couple days initially in hospital due to the nursing staff getting my pain meds messed up but after that was sorted out every day saw a marked improvement.

Evo the wrestler slash physio therapist was a great help in my hospital physio therapy. My wife drove us to Costco in Abbotsford the day of discharge, where we had a break for half an hour then home to Summerland. It was a good ride up. I am in physio twice a week here in town; not using the walker, or the crutches now either. I am using walking sticks though. Everyday I feel better and stronger.

My incisions look great. I had the staples out on Monday of this week.
I won't be running any marathons for a while but hope to dance with my wife as we celebrate a big anniversary in April. Feeling great and no arthritic pain. I also do all of my bed exercises a few times a day and am looking forward to having a life back. When I can sit for a longer time we can meet for a coffee and catch up. Look forward to seeing you then. Cheers Christian

Hello Christian! Absolutely delighted to learn that your rehab is progressing so well. Truly, I am more than impressed! I think you are further ahead than me and you have been dealing with two new hips. Keep up the good work! Onward! Fight! Yes, let's keep in  touch and arrange to meet when you are ready. Fondestos to you and Barbara from Lady Dar, still working on the side fence so I suspect she'll want a bottle of wine with dinner this evening! Cheers, Patrizzio!
Pics: Sleepy felines, a few minutes ago! My excuse for not being able to make the bed!

Thx for the sympathy. Actually, right now it's my back. Too much bending & lifting! Slow progress. Oven clean but no energy to clean the racks. Actually, I'm not that impressed with the self clean, first time. Clean DW next WM once laundry done. Never cleaned like this before when leaving for the sunny south but didn't lease home in past. Next time, might hire someone to help. Too late now!! Tenants coming at 10:30 tomorrow. Doesn't help I got very little sleep. Too much on the brain! Of course, I take so much with us. Still, we have to find homes for what we don't take. Why is this such a material world!!

Well, the good news is that Knox United Fall Fair was on the receiving end of several donations. I also bit the bullet & consigned a lot of clothing as well as parting with several pairs of my beloved heels!! Bad hip contributed to the latter decision!! Heart breaking!! You likely wouldn't understand. I hadn't worn a few in years but I liked to know they were in my closet, ha! ha! Guess I thought I might wear them out for dinner, like from the car to under the table or for making the grand entrance to a special event & then change to a more practical pair later. Oh well, it's $$ in my pocket. Last week, I collected 260.00! I do get a higher percentage profit if I use my $$ as a credit for shopping, 40% as opposed to 35%. The consignment business in Parksville called Kit & Kaboodle Trading Co is awesome. It has 3 different shops: high end, the main intake one with great stuff too and one for children. They even accept/sell home decor, jewelry, purses, shoes, small items of furniture, etc, etc. I have made some wonderful finds. Well, I must pause. I'm nodding off as I type!!😱😳 Cheers! M

Hello Ms Clean/Lower Back Sufferer!  Sorry to hear about your sore back! Almost nothing worse. I wonder if Lady Dar knows about K&K in Parksville. Sounds just like her kind of store! I am just up from a nap as I was out of bed at 7:15 am, earliest since being home. All your house-cleaning is making me feel guilty so hurry up and hit the road! Cheers,  Patrizzio!

I cannot believe we are 80% loaded & the van is in the garage for the first time since we moved. Too much junk before. Boy, what a good feeling!! My back is still sore, but from lifting. I'll be fine. It's not a chronic problem. Considering I spent over an hour looking for my full set of keys, which were in my backwards apron the whole time, it's a miracle I got as much done as I did. Lack of sleep & stress can really do one in! Wash bedding in a.m. & vacuum/swiffer, then we're done!! Omg, we're drinking wine now. I really need a massage!! Life is good!!
Maggie Hi to Corinne!!💜

Hello Kenton and Wildwood Park! Trust everyone is well. On the off chance that you are interested in my own personal, post-op odyssey here is an account, more or less, to date! Fondestos from Lady Kahlo, to one and all. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Good to hear from you Patrick, and to see your photos. It must be nice to have the surgery behind you, and to have it be a major success. I found the Scrapbook excellent in recording many of the facets that have been involved in the making of the library. Tom excels as well in mentioning a large number of the people involved, and in keeping the tone light. But no, it doesn't make me regret retirement.

I continue to enjoy various fitness classes at community centres. I always choose light hearted ones such as Zumba Gold, and the Gentle Fit class whose instructor gets me to wear antlers in December. I continue to enjoy acrylic painting. My cat, Emma, is 21 and I have decided to take only very short trips until she passes. She is understandably frail.

Elizabeth Caskey and I meet in a neighbourhood coffee shop fairly often. As you may know her husband died this time last year. Whenever Hilde and Peter Colenbrander aren't off on an adventure we get together. Well, time to touch up a painting. I have my paintings on my wall, and thus I frequently decide to redo bits of them. I don't think they will ever be done. Cheers to you, Lady Dar, and the puds, Bev
Hi Bev! Pleased to learn that you are keeping well. Please pass along best wishes to Elizabeth, Hilde and Peter. First met Peter, I believe,at one of the wine-tastings I organized for some of the librarians at UBC. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Day 15, Post-Op Main Street Marathon Blues: Thursday, September 29th!

No fathers or mothers think their own children ugly; and this self-deceit is yet stronger with respect to the offspring of the mind. -Miguel de Cervantes, novelist (29 Sep 1547-1616)

Well, I guess your account was a fine prelude to the photos of the stitches!  NOT TO BE MISSED! Thank you for the lively account. I tuned in especially keenly each time you mentioned the suspected blood clots and other setbacks, but the fact that you were writing the message gave me a bit of reassurance that you were not going to die from any of these.  Thank Goodness!

At first I thought, what an amazing mass of coincidences that Patrick has chanced upon all these acquaintances at the hospital and everywhere he went; but then I reminded myself that Canada is not overpopulated, and beside that, that Patrick knows most of the people in the country or their cousin, ex-girlfriend or common bartender.  So really, no surprises there.

We do hope at some point to make it up for a visit. Sounds like we will have to apply for a slot however. Maybe next spring?  We are all set to hunker down for the winter.  We are hoping it's not a Trumpian winter, I should add, or travel plans may be moved up.  There is so much class between your esteemed leader (although our Libertarian standard bearer could not even come up with his name, so we have two candidates running who are whacko idiots) and our current president that it leaves me speechless to think of how deep the chasm would be should our proto-Fascist come to power.  (An excellent book review of Ulrich's new biography of Hitler read point by point like a description of Trump's persona and campaign).  While I think of books, I do plan to read the Whitehead book soon, but would also recommend to you Viet Tranh Nguyen's The Sympathizer.  Extremely well-written and a marvelous story as well.

I hope you are able to resume the activities you love (I mean the ones you seem to have halted for the moment, obviously malt and vino are not a problem) and I'm glad you are being thoughtful about the opiates. Nancy and I
send you our love and best wishes, and love and regards to Corinne, Chloe and the rest of the crew. Glad to hear news of Nicolina and hope the rest of the Squamoids are similarly thriving....HUGS and toasts (both sorts!) to your health! Cactus

Hello Hunkered Down Berkeloids! Lovely to hear from you and receive your ever witty, if, at times, obviously politically melancholic/pessimistic, (understandably so), missive. You may well be aware of the following work, David Cay Johnston's, The Making of Donald Trump, but in case not, I'm sure you should seek it out. I listened to him interviewed this morning on CBC's The Current with Anna Maria Tremonti.  He is a "Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist with a few decades' worth of insights about how Trump — the businessman — operates. Johnston is an expert in U.S. economics and tax law and his new book looks into whether Trump's touted "golden touch" could prove his Achilles' heel in this race for the White House." I simply cannot believe that Trump isn't doing hard time on the rock pile somewhere given the years of documented corrupt practices. I think you both should think of moving no matter who wins the election as the fact that so many Americans favour him is deeply unsettling, to say the least.

Thank you for suggesting Nguyen's The Sympathizer. I have a vague memory of hearing something about it, perhaps on one of CBC's "book" programs, so appreciate the recommendation. Lady Dar is back outside, painting the fence, supervised by both Etta and Duke. They delight in being "free" but we still feel we need to keep them leashed as we are worried they might wander too far afield at this point. Swelling on my thigh is almost completely gone, am pleased to report. Plan to go for a reasonably long walk down Main today as I need to hit the bank and do a number of other errands. Weather has turned a bit more coolish but still sunny and bright so very pleasant.

Quite disappointed to relate that I decided, yesterday, after much soul-searching, that I will not volunteer at the VWF this year. I had already been assigned my shifts, selling tickets at Studio 1398, [Lady Dar will bus to Vancouver as she will be in charge of the bar at the same venue.], so that I could sit down for duration of each shift. I'm hoping to begin my physio next week and leaving town for ten days or so will interrupt that process. Given the minor setbacks I've already experienced, I really do wish to concentrate on becoming as mobile as possible before we head to Tinsel Town for Christmas.

At least that is the plan, as of this writing, so we may well be "squatting" in your, or one of your like-minded "Trump dodger" neighbours', empty home, in mid-December. You can house/cat sit, [Another consideration, albeit a secondary one, involving not leaving in October.], for us while we are away until you find a place to stay in Naramata, close to one of the many wineries where you will be in charge of the Tasting Rooms, in between shifts on the Reference Desk at the Penticton Public Library! You'll love the pool at the Community Centre, (laps all day), and I've already told the lifeguards about your sandwiches! Terrific delicatessen, Il Vecchio, but a few blocks away so you won't have to worry about sandwich meat! Donna Florida can do luncheon with the ladies in The Flatlanders so she'll be kept busy as well! KVR to walk or ride so you'll both be able to get the exercise you'd otherwise have climbing your Vicente Everest driveway! Also, time for you to re-discover snow. Paradise indeed!

Bit of a respite from Freeloaders until this Sunday when Maya's Mom, Lynette, will be staying overnight. She will been visiting relatives in Vernon and will overnight en route to Vancouver. Time for my yogurt and fresh peaches before I have a quick shower so that I'm smelling like roses on my walkabout downtown. [Never know who one might bump into!] Will look for The Sympathizer at The Book Shop, an incredible used book store you'd both delight in. Yet another reason to move! Fondestos from Lady Kahlo, to you both, dabbing away at the fence in between efforts to herd lil' doggie felines. Cheers, Patrizzio! Pics: I suggested Lady Kahlo use Duke's tail as a paint brush! Please make your holiday reservations at Villa Vicente in timely fashion, although as yet there are no competitive offers! Cactus!

Hi again, Vincenzo! Pleased to think that you believe The Trumpster Charlatan will not be the next Regent. Will send along menu and wine list for our stay once I've consulted with Lady Dar about her gluten-free needs and other gastronomic desires. In any event, I thought that Canadian Freeloaders "trumped", so to speak, any and all other reservations! Cheers, Il Conduttore! No Message Oops..I was writing to say how honored we are that you've chosen to spend more time healing for Tinsel Town...we know how much you enjoy the writer's festival xoxo Hi Tinsel Town Healing Spa! I look forward to being pampered when in LA, it goes without saying, but you should know that our visit has more to do with Etta and Duke wishing to visit their canine cousin that the VWF. I trust Winston reciprocates the offer of paws across the border! Cheers, Cat Ambassador Dunn!

Hello. Not 100% sure of my plans or departure time on Sunday; as yet. Probably be arriving in Penticton somewhere between 4-6. I can let you know Sunday morning. If you have time or interest I thought we could do a walk Monday morning then I can take you out for lunch before heading to Vancouver.
Talk soon.
Hi Lynette! Lovely to hear from you but don't worry about arrival time. We'll have dinner whenever you turn up. Lots to do so we won't be twiddling our thumbs so enjoy your visit with family. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Quick reply. So busy preparing for tenant, arriving Sat a.m. Then, back to AB. South Oct 27, Yuma Nov 1. Not good with pain. Hoping down time will be quick. Won't be for at least a year or longer. Want to get back to Pickleball & being able to walk 18 holes even with a few hilly parts. For now, 9 holes on a flat course is my max. Same Park but different lot. Cheers & hi to you both, Maggie💜 Hi Maggie! Lovely to hear from you but sympathize with you and packing! Always more to do than one thinks, at least in our experience. Thanks for Yuma info. Obviously, will be in touch, well beforehand if we are passing through. Fondestos from Lady Dar, to you, Mover Woman. Travel safely. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Crazy busy preparing for our tenants who arrive Saturday morning!! Worse than a move!! Of course, we've only had three days to get ready. One day left!!😳

Just back Tuesday late aft from AB visiting the family with Frank's sister from UK. She was with us for 10 days. Oct 1st is a month earlier than we intended to lease our place. Timing sucked!! Don't think our place has ever been this clean/organized. I'm pretty anal about housekeeping, too. We will be ready, but hard to believe that now!😜

Happy to hear you decided against volunteering. Rehab is more NB right now. Good luck with speedy recovery.  Will be interested in hearing how well you recover & get back to regular activity. Right now, for me, sitting & lying in bed are the worst!! Rolling over is damn near impossible! Frank says he needs a hoist & I only weigh 130. Actually, he was talking about a horse harness, lol! 😖😬😜 Ciao!! Maggie Hello Horse Harness Woman! Sounds like you really need a hip replacement as I experienced much of the discomfort you desribe before I had my right hip replaced in 2010.  Cheers, Patrizzio!
Hi Guys, Here is the story of my move to the West coast (our second transcontinental move, and hopefully the last). I was pulling an 18 foot trailer fully loaded with our furniture and boxes. God are books heavy!

I left La Pocatière early in the afternoon on September 8, in the rain, and had a minor mechanical problem (broken brake line) wen I arrived in Quebec, so I spent the first night in the Walmart parking lot, 125 km from home! The next day, a Good Samaritan helped me out to fix the brake line so I drove to the Walmart in St Jérome, North of Montreal and 250 km further (note the exponential progress!) after the two rear tires exploded on my pickup, near Trois-Rivières. Tires looked good but were old so they overheated. Luckily I had two spares. It felt like Quebec was sending me parting shots! It has lost 600,000 people over the last ten years, so the bleeding must stop.

Saturday morning I had to buy tires (Michelins, enough silliness already!)
and I drove all afternoon, first in the magnificent Laurentides then through the La Verendrye national park, and slept on the other side of Kirkland Lake, Ontario, on a cold, rainy and  windy night. Distance covered, 500 km, so at this exponential rate, I will arrive on time said I ;-) Saturday afternoon I had also purchased an anti-sway hitch at an RV dealership, as a precaution because my trailer had already tried to kiss the ditch :-O.

Sunday, under a cold but bright sunshine, I started by installing my hitch on the side of the road, using power for my drill from a gravel yard. Then I crossed Northern Ontario feeling much safer, following Transcanada hwy 11 mostly used by trucks (Cochrane, Kapuskasing, Hearst, where agriculture ends and boreal forest begins, Longlac, Geraldton, Nipigon, where I stopped for the night. Beautiful pavement all along with no traffic except trucks. Monday morning early I left Nipigon and made it to Claude Lord's piece of paradise near Vermilion Bay, ON then on to La Broquerie to sleep at Ti-Pierre and Nicole's. My trailer tires were wearing down fast because they were underrated for the load, so I bought four HD 8 ply tires in Steinbach (that was an excellent move).

My brother in France was worried sick when he found out I was travelling overloaded. I told him operating overloaded farm equipement for years has groomed me for this challenge. I left on Tuesday afternoon from Steinbach, flew past Winnipeg with regret, as no time left, and slept in Wolseley, two hours before Regina. Wednesday, obligatory stop at Balgonie for cheap fuel, the a wonderful drive of 1200 km across the Prairies, through Wainwright, just to take on more scenery and abuse the truck transmission in the hills, and laid down my bed in Hinton, withing sight of the Rockies. Thursday morning I undertook to cross the Rockies through Jasper and the wide Northern valleys, then past Kamloops through the well named Hell's Gate in the canyon of the Fraser (that road hanging over cliffs I won't take again!). And I managed to catch the last ferry to the Island on Thursday evening at 10:40! (Thank you St Christophe). It is said that to die with no regrets, one must live an eventful life, I can check that!

So eight days on the road, without major problems, during which I saw
beautiful landscapes. The leaves had not yet changed colors in Abitibi. In the Prairies, harvest was in full swing, and in the Rockies, there were tourists but not enough to slow me down. Oh, and I slept in my truck the whole way (except one night in Manitoba), having bought a comfy sleeping bag at Canadian Tire with my Canadian Tire money ;-) Our rancher house is small (1100 ft2) but much to our liking, with towering trees on the East and South sides. Carol has already turned this place into a comfortable nest with her personal touch :-) --
Bruno
Do you mean second transcontinental move this summer?  Cause I count more than that! Cheers everyone! Sure Chooch! Kick a good man when he's down! Cheers, Patrizzio! Sorry! Couldn't resist! ❌⭕️❌⭕️

Dear Coureur de Macadam Goudronné! Glad you made it to Qualicum in one piece, Brunello! We had heard of some of your initial misfortunes, from Chooch, the lovely evening we spent with Famiglia Waldron. However, reading about your cross-country saga was most exciting and entertaining. I can hardly wait for the movie! Who do you have in mind for starring role? A younger Gérard Xavier Marcel Depardieu? On the off chance that you are interested in my own personal post-op odyssey here is an account, more or less, to date! Fondestos from Lady Kahlo, to you, Qualicum Folk.Enjoy your new abode and community. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hello Former Fellow Hospital Roommates! Trust you are both well and speeding along the road to full recovery! Sorry that it has taken me so long to send along greetings. No excuses but plenty of reasons! On the off chance that you are interested in my own personal post-op odyssey here is an account, more or less, to date! Give us a call, Barbara and Christian, as we'd love to see you both whenever it might suit, wherever it might suit. Travel safely to Nicaragua, Brad. Hope pregnancy and birth go exceedingly well. Cheers, Patrizzio!

At long last! Thanks to everyone at UBC and beyond who assisted in its production. I am told it will eventually be accessed through the catalogue, with the ability to search through key-word,  but this version will afford at least an introductory overview. I hope you enjoy what you see. Tom

UBC Library Communications and Marketing, in collaboration with emeritus Tom Shorthouse, are excited to announce the release of the Golden Scrapbook: The Centennial Update 1965-2015. Complimented by colour photographs of library employees, library spaces and events from the past 50 years, the scrapbook profiles the growth and development of the library over fifty years. Access the digital version of the scrapbook online. Library circulation copies of the scrapbook will be available in early October (more information to follow in the coming weeks). Explore full details of the project. Special thanks to Tom Shorthouse, George Tsiakos, Erwin Wodarczak and the Library Communications team for their contributions.

I have just skimmed through the Golden Scrapbook. I am extremely confident in saying, "What a tour de force!" Thank you so much for a highly readable historical document, that shows how important people are in the making of a great library. It is going to be hard not to stay up too late tonight, reading it carefully. Beverley Scott  Hello Bev! Trust you are well. I echo your feelings completely. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hello all and Tom: What a monumental project! Congratulations on your perseverance. I have yet to open up your project to see if Judy Thiele (the real Crane Librarian ) or I are included , since as Judy passed away in the 1990’s and we decided out of necessity and with your then committee’s agreement, to move Crane from the Library to Student Services and the Disability Resource Centre with it’s richer budget. Congratulations, Tom, you have truly lived up to your skills as researcher and project accomplisher. Best regards. Paul E. Thiele.
Congratulations, Tom. To lib-emeritus: I understand from Tom that a print version is not being planned (except in very limited quantity for library circulation [ 1 copy?]. Is this something we can do something about? I certainly would be willing to purchase a print copy. Anyone else interested in pursuing this? Regards, Margaret To Mr. Tom Shorthouse c/o UBC Library Communications and Marketing, I would also like to purchase a print copy of the Golden Scrapbook: the Centenial Update 1965-2015, when it will be available.

Hello Patrick, That must have been scary yesterday, after showing off you buttocks to us, that looked so beautiful, I cannot imagine how ugly this metamorfosis yesterday would have looked like. Good acton from your side.
Luckily you have it all under control now, and please keep it this way. Let's see what the weather will do next week when we visit Orofino, and plan accordingly, very much looking forward to it. Maybe bridge at my house on Tuesday, I will check with Pam first, or fond a substitute, and wil let you know when confirmed. Cheers to you both, and take it easy my friend. Jos Hi Josinta!
Thanks for your good wishes, my Darling! Back in the saddle again! Let us know about bridge and picnic as events come closer. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Patrick,
Good to see that you are recovering really well and that nurse Corinne is looking after you! Well they might say “the last ones to leave South Australia turn off the lights” as that is just what happened on Wednesday at 3:30pm!! We had taken the caravans with Don/Anne to Leigh Creek to catch a glimpse of the wild flowers.

Monday was a lovely day and we arrived safely and took the cars out to Farina, an old town that is being renovated. Tuesday was windy and cool but we explored the region and ate and drank far too much. Wednesday we drove into Leigh Creek itself, a very sad empty town that the government/owners are closing down due to the mining of dirty coal!! As the wind had blown in and the trees were bending we spent an uncomfortable night and decided to drive home on Thursday. At 3:30pm the power was cut off, no lights etc all over the state. After cooking rump steak and chicken/pine nut sausages on gas bbq complemented with delish potato salad we huddled inside Don/Anne’s van with a few bottles of McGuigans red!!

Thursday saw us driving through horrendous winds, flooded roads and many large trees that had been uprooted due to water and wind. Trevor was worried that the water was so high we were driving through that it was over the step of the van, but all was OK! Arrived home at 6 pm to find all was ok and power had been restored. An adventure indeed. Much love Tina

Hello Tornado Adventurers! Sounded like quite an odyssey! Glad things turned out all right, in the end. For my part, rehab continues apace. Must away as I'm going to have a spot of brunch. Cheers, "More Mobile, if not Richer", Patrizzio!

Reference Queries from NY Pub: An excerpt from Harper's January 2016 is attached. Did we ever keep any of ours? Hi Big Al! Trust you are well. I think the last question, ["Is this where I ask questions I can't get answers to?"] was asked of Trump, over and over again by Lester Holt throughout the first presidential debate! Cheers, Patrizzio! Yeah, everything is good except that I'm going to need my aortic valve repaired soon. The cardiologist says best to do it while I'm in relatively good health. I'm more or less symptom free, no shortness of breath etc. but when the experts say it must be done, I bend to their will. The surgeon will call me next week to set up a consultation.  Now, "if I only had a brain!" Al

Hi Big Al! Buona Fortuna with aortic valve repair! With respect to your comment, "Now, 'if I only had a brain!'" snap below shows the mark on my forehead, inked by friend, a couple of days before my hip surgery. Lady Dar wanted me to have a lobotomy as opposed to a new hip! Cheers, Patrizzio! Pic: Brain surgery!

Hi Vinnie! Enjoyed my walkabout immensely. Stopped in at Freedom Bike Store to pick up Marcus' email address, so I could send him album of pictures I'd taken at Art and All That Jazz. [Hi Marcus! Here is the album from last Saturday. Fondestos to Ladybird Woman! Cheers, Patrizzio!] Then down Main to make an appointment with Mark the Barber for a haircut next week. That done to the RBC ATM for cash as I was hoping to pick up The Sympathizer. Chap at desk knew about it but it's too new for them to have received any used copies just yet. Found the third novel in Jussi Adler-Olsen's Department Q Series, A Conspiracy of Faith. We both really enjoyed the first two.

Then to the drugstore to cash in my winning lottery tickets. Picked up $1! Slightly disappointed, I caned my way to see Guillermo, hiking friend who lives a block north of us, on the opposite side of Burns. He was just coming out of his house when I arrived and we had a grand time chatting, catching up in the warm, late afternoon sun. His wife, another Naughty Nancy, has been in China with a number of other members of Lady Dar's Flatlander group. Having a wonderful time according to all reports.

Must away as I'm on deck for a mixed green salad. Please tele-transport some of your fabulous dressing with next message! Cheers, Wiser, if not Richer, Patrizzio!
Pics: Lovely rose-hip bush I passed on way home. Adoring and adorable siblings I encountered when I entered house through garage this afternoon. Vampire Kitten!

Hello O Susannah and Champagne Charlie! Trust you are both well. Not sure how long we will be in Vancouver, in early November, but perhaps we can arrange to play some bridge over the course of our visit, if everyone's busy schedules allow. Let me know what you think and we'll plan accordingly. Fondestos from Lady Dar to you both. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Day 14, Post-Op William the Conqueror 1066 Blues: September 28th!

Military justice is to justice what military music is to music. -Georges Clemenceau, statesman (28 Sep 1841-1929)

Hi Patrice, just catching up on last couple emails and sorry to not have gotten back sooner. I'm glad you are well on the mend and being well taken care of by the sisterhood and others. I continue to work on the new place solo as everyone seems to have their own stuff to look after before the crappy weather comes. I work well by myself as having to explain what i want and get it done right seems to be chore, having said that I have a massive amount of stuff to do so have my work cut out for me!. Hopefully I will get some help eventually and for now am going to concentrate on the exterior stuff as obviously I can work indoors in any climate.

I wound up not going to Anacortes as I had issues with my motorcycle a casualty of years of long terms of storage and old gas gumming up the carburetors so running like crap. I didn't have time to deal with it so had to take a pass. Just as well as, as much as I like the camaraderie of the bike crowd and have not seen mot of them since last year this time or Sturgis from August of last year. It turns out they were not able to get a house and instead had to get rooms in the scuzziest motel at exorbitant rates in Anacortes..on top of that the weather was disgusting on the Friday when they went down and one of the guys wiped out on his bike and totaled it as well as broke his collar bone. obviously wasn't meant to be and I'm glad i took a pass!.I asked Ivan (Jake's soccer coach of many years) what had happened and he sent me a brief message saying that the guys needs to pend more time in the saddle and is seriously A.D.D. so I guess he wasn't paying attention . I will get more details when i see him in person.

I must head off to the work pit so will sign off but will keep in touch. Take care for now and love to the clan. Cheers, Al

Hi Work Pit Man! I'm sorry that your weekend didn't work out but from the sound of things it may well have turned out for the better, as far as weather and your workload were concerned. I certainly sympathize with chap and his accidento, (whether it was self-induced or not), having just had a much less serious fall. Just glad you are in one piece and able to work on your new cabin.

On the rehab front, had a bit of a minor scare this afternoon. I was just preparing a bit of lunch when I noticed a large bump on my thigh. I immediately jumped to the conclusion that it was blood clot and I was going to die before I could get to the malt cabinet! Phoned my doctor and I was told to come in right away. Fortunately, he thinks it is simply a result of a bit of bleeding into the thigh muscle as a result of having staples removed yesterday. Makes sense as blood clots one has to be concerned about are those in a vein. At any rate, he suggested I take it easy for next few days so I guess that means that Lady Dar will have to open wine bottles now!

At the moment, I am lying down, in bed, Duke under the covers, keeping me warm! [Earlier, in my office, Duke was sleeping beside me, making it difficult to use the mouse. Clover would never be so "pushy", I'm sure!] He loves to be close, wherever one happens to be. Etta, on the other hand, is far more independent. She is napping in the garage in the small padded basket Lady Dar bought from the SPCA when we adopted them. When Duke is there, he sleeps on top of a large pile of boxes full of books we've yet to unpack.

Lady Dar went to a fund-raiser for Grandmothers for Africa, at the Shatford Centre, a couple of blocks away, after bringing me home. She has been painting the fence between us and new duplex over last two days. The section that collapsed, as a direct result of the crushed rock forced against it by landscape contractor, has finally been fixed but other sections still seem compromised. Gather we will have to negotiate with new owners on how to proceed next! Always something. Guess you shouldn't have replaced fuse on air-conditioning unit! Fondestos to you and Marilyn. Cheers, Patrizzio!

I'm surprised you split so much; that's blister-forming hard work. Just so you know, based on the pics, you've taken some of the newly felled logs ie they haven't sat for a season... so will hold a bunch of sap & likely smoke and spark quite a bit on the fire. Can't remember if you have an open fireplace or a wood burning stove. Hope you enjoy the spirit of 'wood-warmth' for many evenings during the coming cold season. Staying warm by a wood fire seems to invoke something primordial in humans! See you down this way whenever you get here - but not a good idea if you arrive when we're gone camping in Phoenix & Tuscon! Cheers. Phil

Hello Sedona Sun-Worshipers!!  Thanks for note on newly felled wood. I assumed this to be the case and was planning to burn the wood that I managed to scrounge from lot next door, two summers ago now. I has been drying since then so will use it first. Depending on temperatures this winter, should last for most of burning season. Splitting was the easiest part of "stealing" your wood. I'd appreciate an electric-assist wheelbarrow next time!!! Nevertheless, thanks again for your generosity! Gather, from Josinta and Spumoni, that Yosemite was magical, Jack Rabbit! So pleased all worked out well. Fondestos from Lady Dar, doing the Downward Stretching Cat at yoga as I scribe. [Duke is sleeping beside me, making it difficult to use the mouse. Nala would never be so "pushy", I'm sure!] Cheers, Patrizzio! Pic: Duke in repose. At least he's not galloping around the house so I suppose I should be grateful!

Next Monday we are going to go up Mt. McLellan which is near St. Andrew's Golf course, but on the other side of White Lake Rd. Aart and Pam are the leaders...So once more we will meet at Home Hardware in Penticton at 9 am and Summerlanders can carpool at 8:40am from the IGA parking lot. Pam

Pre-Selection of Photos of Wedding Bodil & Vince, Aug20th/2016 Hello Corinne and Patrick, Thanks for hosting bridge last night, and the pumpkin dessert inspired me today to look through my recipes.I didn't realize Thanksgiving is around the corner. A few pictures of the wedding, to give you an idea how much we enjoyed the day and the venue. Are we still going to Orofino togeteher soon? Fond memories still linger. Patrick mentioned it to Aart, but we forgot the date and time. Please let us know, and we will pick you up and drive. Cheers, Jos

Hi Josinta and Spumoni! Lovely, lovely time last night so thanks for coming even though I wasn't a particularly gracious host, managing to win top score! Still, you came away with more than fabulous prizes so were quite content, in the end, I trust! Thanks for the delish cuke, Spumoni. We enjoyed half of it in tonight's salad. Also, thanks for the Portuguese, Jos! Tasty indeed. Furthermore, really enjoyed the wedding photos. What a grand event! Bravo!!!

Speaking of wine, yes, Orofino is still on for Saturday, October 8th. Event starts at 1:00 pm. It is a vertical wine-tasting, with nibbles afterwards, so I had suggested to Aarturo that we might have a picnic, somewhere, en route, beforehand, weather permitting, as I think we should have reasonably full stomachs before we start drinking! Or else have a bite at our place if a picnic isn't possible. Let me know what you think and we'll plan accordingly.
Fondestos to you both from Lady Dar, catching up on watching her amore, Victor, in The Young and The Useless. She claims she's been too, too busy being nursemaid to keep abreast of all the earth-shattering developments in Genoa City!!! Apparently Victor will run in the 2020 US Election! Cheers, Patrizzio!

Patrick, Great pics. Thanks for sharing😊 haven't reached my destination yet. Missed my flight from Kelowna to Toronto. I was 8 minutes late checking my bag in at the Kelowna airport. I was re-routed and I now arrive in Halifax at midnight rather than 9 pm. Moral of the story is travel with carry on only. I hope you continue on the road to rapid recovery. See you in a couple of weeks

Hi Re-Routed Traveler! What a complete drag that you missed your flight! Might as well have played bridge last night for all the good packing did you. On the bright side, you can have a lobster omelette for breakfast now! Cheers, Patrizzio!

Maggie Carr to Patrick James Dunn Eager to hear about ur hip! Mine should happen next year hopefully.👍🏻👏Hi Maggie! Buona Fortuna with your coming hip replacement. You'll be sorry you asked to hear about my post-op life but here is an account, more or less, to date! Fondestos to you and Frank from Lady Dar! Cheers, Patrizzio!

David Kessler If you sent word of the surgery, it must have gone by me-sorry! And sorry that it is necessary but hope that you emerge renewed and ready for your traditional trouble!! Hi Cactus! No, I hadn't sent along notice. Fondestos to you and Donna Florida from Lady Dar. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Brenda McMorland Staples all removed successfully? We have been enjoying touring around with our PEI friends. They were staying thanks to a house exchange with a couple in Vernon. They are going to try it with an exchange with Ireland next year. Hi Brenda Louise! Pleased to hear you are enjoying a grand visit with friends from PEI. Did we stay at their place in 2007? Tuesday morning Lady Dar took me to have my staples removed. All fine with incision. Fondestos to you and Single Malt Wally from Lady Dar. All the best to Picasso from Etta and Duke! Cheers, Patrizzio!

Patrizzio,
I hope the "staples plan” is resolved before my next bridge night … I know about the snowies, I may have a solution, or I may bus it, arrive tool-less and just pester you for a few days. In any case, it’s very much up in the air now. My Dad’s Alzheimer’s is pretty bad now, due to a bout of pneumonia in the hospital. He is all over the place. From affable, to Attila the Hun. Had a bit of "Alzheimer’s Rage” this aft. Made me late for the Whitecaps game. ttys(sigh)//bjp Hi Ragin'! Sorry to hear about your Dad! I don't envy you your situation under the circumstances! Come if you can, one way or another. I called VWF today and told them I wouldn't be volunteering this year so I'll be here all October. Decided I'd focus on my rehab. Fondestos to you, Ragin', from Lady Dar. All the best , my friend. Cheers, Il Conduttore!

Day 13, Post-Op Staple Remover Blues: Tuesday, September 27th!

[Thanks Rebekah! Cheers, Uncle Patrizzio!]

Hello Rusty Bridge Bidding Folk! Trust everyone is well! For those of you not away, exploring other climes and topographies, Lady Dar and I would like to host bridge this evening, anytime after 6:30 pm. Etta and Duke have been practicing their bidding skills so are anxious to show them off. Let me know if we have enough players to show these Cat Card Sharks a thing or two and we'll plan accordingly. I'm off to have my incision staples removed this morning so the bridge prizes this evening will be of a calibre well worth winning! Cheers, Hip Hippster Patrizzio!

Pic: Hi Dorothea! Trust you are enjoying your holiday. Just wanted to show you that the lovely Norfolk Pine is being well guarded by Duke and Etta, their favourite potted plant on our back patio! Travel safely.

I'm game tonight! Will be there around 6.30pm. Jos Hi Patrick; Yes I can make it tonight. Thanks for offering to host! Pam Patrick, Thank you for hosting bridge tonight. You and Corinne are the hosts with the most. I set sail for the Maritimes tomorrow so lots of last minute matters to attend to today and tonight. So won’t make it tonight. Have fun all. Pam Hi Maritime Bound Naramatian! Sorry we won't have the pleasure of your company this evening but am pleased to learn tha tyou will soon be en route to a favourite part of our country. Have a wonderful time and let us know when you are back and ready to play. Jos and Spumoni will be playing this evening so at least we'll have one table. Lady Dar took me to have my staples removed this morning. All went very well so looks like I will be enrolling in React, at Penticton Community Pool/Gym, next week. Then the stationary bike!

Lady Dar, Chloë and our niece, Rebekah, visiting form Ottawa, were doing some wine-tasting yesterday afternoon. Stopped at Marichel and were very impressed with your on-going renovations/expansion. Lady Dar thought your view prospects would be even more spectacular once everything is finished. Trust you are both pleased with how things are going. Have a great time and travel safely. Fondestos from Lady Dar. Cheers, Patrizzio! Pics: Staples and staple remover!

Patrick, Thank you for your note. I am pleased to hear about your progress following surgery. You sound very upbeat. Progress is steady at the house but we would like it to be faster. Living is a very disruptive. ‘I know that you are supposed to enjoy the journey but we will both be happy to have this project complete. Look forward to catching up with the bridge gang upon my return. Pam Hello Traveler! I suppose you'll be eating lobster when you read this! Don't fuss about slow progress or renno project. It will all be a distant memory which you can laugh and cry and laugh about before you know it! Cheers, Patrizzio!

It's that time again for some great deals on dress shirts, sports shirts, sweaters, suits, sports jackets, pants and more from Leo Chevalier, Viyella, Sotta Sopra, S. Cohen and Cavori. Please join me for my sample sale next week. Where: FX Building, 222-1951 Glen Drive, Vancouver When: Sunday, October 2, noon to 3 pm (please call my cell for access through the gate which will be closed)
Monday, Oct 3 - Wednesday, Oct 5 - 9:00 am to 4:00 pm See you there! Norm

Hi Stormin'! Trust you are well. Sorry I'll miss another sample sale but we won't be in Vancouver until the week of October 17th-23rd, to volunteer at the Vancouver Writers Festival. Had my left hip replaced on September 14th, at UBC, by Clive Duncan, same surgeon who did my right hip in 2010. Extremely pleased with how everything went and Lady Dar took me to have my staples removed this morning. All fine with incision so looks like I will be enrolling in React's rehab program, at Penticton Community Pool/Gym, next week. Then the stationary bike! Fondestos to you, Janet and Lucy from Cora Lee. Cheers, Il Conduttore! Pics: Staple removal! Just like stuffing a turkey, in reverse, in time for Thanksgiving! Your emails with pics of your wound and extracted metal staples are simply what we all live for xoxo Just wait for full frontal nudity, soon to be on Hallmark! We call that sort of content Hallmark Afterdark Wouldn't have it any other way! Cheers, The Dark is Rising!!!!

Hi Pat I'm going to be on the list for my hip shortly. Did you get a steal hip or ceramic? Glad your healing well. Norm Hi Stormin'! Thanks for good wishes. Glad to learn that you are on the list although sorry to hear that you need to undergo surgery in the first place. I have had Titanium inserts for both hips and so far not a spot of bother, especially with right hip as I've had it since 2010. Didn't even know that ceramic material was an option. Guess you wouldn't set off alarms in airports with latter! Buona Fortuna when time comes. Until then, my advice is to try and be as fit as possible before surgery. Common sense with respect to one's weight as well, it goes without saying. Post-surgery, be very, very disciplined about doing the rehab exercises but then you have your own personal trainer who can crack the whip! All the best, Stormin'. Cheers, Il Conduttore! Pic: Jos and her husband, Aarturo, lent me their stationary bike for rehab once I'm cleared to use it. Will be great as I'll only have to walk to our Rumpus Room and can watch porn while I'm cycling!

Conductoré, What a great looking butt! May I print those photos and frame them? You should have left the staples in … in lieu of other piercings …Talk soon. I hope I can finagle a freeload in October. Depends how my Dad settles in. He is home now for the time being at least. cheers//bjp Hi Ragin' Pleased you like my tush! Print away!! I've kept staples and plan to use them as bridge prizes or else make a necklace for Lady Dar!

Pleased to learn that your Dad is back home, although I'm sure it isn't any easier. Keep us informed about a visit in October but just to remind you posted highway signs say snow tires required after October 1st. Certainly on Coquihalla, due to elevation but, personally, I don't think you need them on Hope-Princeton before December. Last year, back from India, we drove home on December 11th, that way, and had no difficulty, whatsoever. That being said, one needs to monitor weather reports.

Had a note back from Stormin' Norman and he is on the list for a hip replacement! I think Glasgow is a candidate, as well, but from what I have observed, he is in denial. I should know as that was me between 2004 and 2010! Take care of yourself, Ragin'! All the best. Cheers, Il Conduttore!

Glad to hear things are good. Sounds like things are well in hand. Take care T Hi Mama T! Thanks for good wishes. Josinta and Spumoni came over for bridge this evening and we had a lovely time, although I wasn't a particularly gracious host, managing to win top score! Still, they came away with more than fabulous prizes so were quite content, in the end! Fondestos from Lady Dar. Cheers, Patrizzio! Pics: Bridge fiends!

Hi Marilyn! Trust you are well and that Stanchion Man's Anacortes weekend was a blast. Be most delighted to read any poetry you can find the time and energy to write, although I really am not a particularly insightful critic. Fondestos to one and all from Nursemaid Lady Dar. Cheers, Patrizzio! Pics: Rebekah and Chloë bidding farewell to the kittens before heading back to Vancouver. Rebekah, (our niece from Ottawa), flew into Kelowna on Friday and Chloë and Cora Lee drove up to her collect her that evening. She returns to Ottawa on Saturday. Duke boycotts mouse!
