Front Yard Berm Blues: Thursday, April 7th!

We don't understand life any better at forty than at twenty, but we know it and admit it. -Jules Renard, writer (1864-1910)

Hi Corinne and Patrick, I hope all is well. Just to let you know Andre flys to Vancouver next Monday 11th and I will be joining him on Thursday 14th. Frank's birthday and retirement party is on Saturday 16th and after this I will be around for another week. We have yet to decide what to do during this time so wondered if you would be around in Penticton so we could come and pay you a visit along with other friends in the Okanogan Valley? Why not let me know when would be a good time for us to call over the next couple of days and maybe we can talk about it before Andre leaves. It would be great to see you both if it is convenient - it has been far too long. Much love, Rosemary XXX

[Ayn P I devoured each Tintin adventure as fast my Dad Patrick James Dunn could purchase the latest! The very same went for Asterix and Obelix!]

Hello Rosemary!  How lovely to hear from you! Yes, all goes extremely well here, made even better by the warmer spring days, of course. Probably the best time, for us, at least, for you to visit might well be following Frank's celebrations, between Sunday, April 17th-Friday, April 22nd, with some slight provisions

VWF Incite series has an evening with Nick Bantock, Thursday, at 7:30 pm, at VPL, best known, as you probably know, for the Griffin & Sabine series, one of Chloë's favourites so we'd both like to attend. If I do, I need to hightail it out of Dodge on Friday morning, (after rush hour is over!), as I need to be home to welcome a couple, Luise and Dave Hermanutz, from Denman Island, who will be staying for four nights. In fact, we don't know them, (other than from email messages), as they are close friends of Pam Krannitz, someone we've come to know here in Penticton. She live sin a one-bedroom apartment so we offered to have them stay here as we have plenty of room. Actually, should your schedule dictate being here at the same time that is fine as well as we have enough beds!

Unfortunately, Lady Dar won't be here after Friday morning as she, herself, is heading into Vancouver, by bus, for the weekend and following Monday! So there you have it! With respect to a phone call, we will be home from 6:00 pm on for the next three evenings. Other than that we will probably be in and out, during the day. Of course, we want very much to see you both so trust we'll be able to work something out. Fondestos to you both from Lady Dar, in absentia, out at her regular yoga class, doing the downward-facing dog! Cheers,Patrizzio!
New patio roof: You'll be the first guests to help christen the new addition!

Dear Corinne and Patrick, Thank you both for your swift responses. Life sounds as busy as ever for you both now you are officially retired and living "out in the country". If it is acceptable to you both, I think we will plan to arrive mid to late Sunday afternoon (17th) and leave again on the morning of Tuesday 19th. Saturday night will no doubt be a late night so we will not be planning to leave North Van until after noon. Looking forward very much to seeing you both and catching up with all your news.

I did not call last night since with you eight hours behind us so 6pm your time is 2am ours but will try later today around your breakfast time before you both go out and about for the day. If we miss each other I will ask Andre to call to finalise details once he arrives in BC and is on the same time zone. Much love, Rosemary XXX Hi again, Rosemary!
How delightful to have chatted with you and Andre. As we mentioned, give us a shout, a day or so before you head up to the Okanagan to confirm arrival, etc. Cheers, Patrizzio!
Thanks for the tips. Yes do many to choose from and so little time :) we're your capable hanks for this trip! Just means many more trips in the future! Well mother is 93 and has severe dementia and Parkinson, so good care is all ‎we can do for her. She lives with my sister, so that's taken care of. I just help out when I can. See you soon! Luise

Hi Luise! Both Corinne and I can certainly understand the difficult time you are having with your Mother. My own Mom lived until just two weeks before her 99th birthday. Sadly, for the last two years of her life she was very frail and really couldn't communicate. Fortunately, she was otherwise "healthy', pain free and always easy-going and "happy". She lived in a care facility just a block from us, so it was possible to see her every day. Corinne's parents are in their early 90's and her Dad, almost 92, has just been put on home-oxygen. Corinne's brother, George, lives immediately next door to them, at Falcon Lake, a provincial park in the Whiteshell, so that makes things easier in terms of day-to-day care/help, obviously. We will drive to to Winnipeg in June to celebrate their 72nd wedding anniversary.

I know Pam has plans to do some walks/hikes while you are here. That being the case, I suggest we focus on the wineries in Naramata and, perhaps, OK Falls. At any rate, we can chat about this when you hit town. Do you have an ETA on Friday? All the best. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Patrick, I think that if the Monday hikes go well, perhaps a Thursday hike can be added on that day. I didn't really participate in any Thursday hike, because my week is getting so full. I would be interested in an easy morning hike on Thursdays. I have been swimming on Thursday afternoons. I am gone for the weekend, but hope to hike on Monday if something is planned. Hanneke

Hi Hanneke! I agree with what you mentioned about chatting over a possible Thursday hike after a Monday hike. Furthermore, I think that everyone's busy schedules will probably self-limit participation so, personally, I don't think we need to "worry" overmuch about size of group. Anyway, we can chat about this on Monday as I believe Pam will be sending out a notice. Enjoy your weekend. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hello Laura and Little Eva and the Imperiales! How lovely to hear from you, Laura! Belated birthday greetings to you Yda! Hip Hip Hooray! For SHe's a Jolly Good Fellow! Hip Hip Hooray! You sound even busier, with work and travel, (Really enjoyed all the snaps so thanks for those, Laura!), than we seem to have been, of late. Fondestos to you both from Lady Dar. Cheers,Patrizzio!

Hello Prairie Folk! Trust drive back to Manitoba went without hitch! Cheers, Patrizzio!

Wonderful idea getting patio re-make.....a real challenge, but great rewards after. Clever how you figured out the sun (must study coming and going) because that will offer great shade. Do understand that area does heat up somewhat. Good planning. And, hope all goes well with the construction; but it should, as you thought it out first. Always important to think ahead, hey?
Thanks for the up-date.

We have been attending funerals, plus a little visiting on the side.....Sandee says your bridge outings sound perfect.....Thinking about you folks......Arv & Sandee Had to run, but back again.....were at a funeral; large one, a Mr. Peter Barkman; owner and originator of the famous Barkman Concrete empire.....was also an old patient of mine, years ago. Saw many old friends, visited with them, had a lunch after; which is usual now. Sandee enjoyed seeing so many folks that we knew before we moved to the lake, about fifteen years ago. That short period of living there, going south in the winter; made us lose track of so many.
Now, back in town; associating with those from before, is interesting; when you hear from them; all the changes in their lives also.

Our drive back was great; clear roads, good motels; stayed out only two nights; then the next day after we arrived.....the snow and blowing started; so we were
fortunate to have left when we did; a day early. Guess we got a message.....get out on 30th. So, we did. Some of our friends hit very bad weather two days into their travels....so we were fortunate....Everyone got here safely though....a blessing with all the traffic; especially the large trucks that really slow things down at times.....Well, Sandee has supper going; so do hope your repairs and changes progress in your favour....xxxxxx A & S

Next Monday we are going to try Mount Hawthorn, beside Mahony Lake. Chuck and Tony will be our fearless leaders. This is normally a 5 hour hike, but the Gentle Breezes did it last year at 4 hours. So this will be longer and more challenging than our normal Monday hikes.
We will be departing Home Hardware in Penticton at 9 am. Summerlanders can carpool at IGA parking lot at 8:40am. Coffee will likely be back at Opus. Pam
Hi Zoe and Matt! Thought I'd better dash off another message to give you time to think about the drive in May. Just to clear things up, we actually live in Penticton, 611 Burns Street, as opposed to Naramata. Lynne and Peter, (I don't think you are thinking of the same couple as they don't have any children.), live almost exactly 10 km from our place, (I know as I one of my favourite rides is along Naramata Road, past all the wineries!
However, my main point is that I suggest you drive all the way on Friday. When do you finish work? Even if you leave Vancouver at 6:00 pm you should be at our place by 10:00 pm, especially if you take The Connector out of Merritt, then south on 97 through Peachland and Summerland. You'll be on Eckhardt when you enter Penticton and all you have to do is stay on that street until you cross Main Street. Pen High will be on your right and our street, Burns, is two blocks before Government. (If you reach the stop lights there you have gone too far!) Make a left on Burns and we are the second house from the corner, on your left. You'll know it by the NY skyscraper duplex being built right next door!

Suit yourselves but there really isn't much to see/do in Merritt and why waste money on a motel when you can help us pay for our new louvres! It should stay fairly light till probably 9:30 pm, maybe longer, and the highway is divided for all but a fairly short bit near Peachland. We can have a late supper if you haven't eaten anything en route. (I suggest you pack sandwiches and something to nibble on as if you stop you will lose much valuable time.) Fuel is cheapest at Bridal Falls, not long after you leave Chilliwack, and we always fuel up there at the Shell station. If you haven't taken my advice about packing some food you can buy stuff at the store there or even have something at the restaurant next door. However, time is of the essence and you have wine and craft beer to drink in Penticton!

Anyway, just let us know what you think. Obviously, do what you feel most comfortable with. Just wanted to let you know that coming on Friday isn't an imposition and really makes more sense in terms of spending more time in and around Penticton, especially since the Farmer's Market will be on by then and you will miss most of it, it if you don't arrive until midday, as vendors start to close around that time.

Wonderful news about Friends. Lady Dar is certainly delighted. In June we are off to Winnipeg/Falcon Lake to celebrate Corinne's parent's 71st wedding anniversary. Having too, too many visitors over the coming summer to head overseas! With new louvered roof, no money to travel anyway!

Spent a goodly part of the late morning and early afternoon today preparing the front yard for to earth berms Lady Dar has decided will "soften" the xeriscape yard. Needed to move some of the small rock and peel back some of the heavy plastic sheeting, (retards weed growth), underneath to allow the new plants to send their roots to China! On the Easter Weekend Lady Dar bought a number of lovely cactii from a large nursery near Osoyoos as water is an issue, as you can well understand. We also assembled a cedar, raised vegetable bed, as we want to grow everything from green onions to garlic, herbs to tomatoes, and whatever else catches our fancy, at least until we see how green our thumbs are! Peter very kindly offered to bring his utility trailer by tomorrow and we'll collect a load of soil from the City Works Yard and, once home, create the berms, fill the garden surround and then collapse!

Let us know what you think about travel suggestions and we'll plan accordingly! Fondestos from Mme Coriandre to you both. Cheers, Patizzio! Pics: First section of louvres; Lady Dar in landscaping mode! Empty raised vegetable bed! Lilies from Dusty's garden in Falcon. He gave them to Corinne last June and she planted them here once we were back.

Hello, Patrick... I was wondering if you wanted to go for a bike ride... give me a call and we can set up some rides... I am a little rusty thou.. so you will have to take it easy on me.. as I have not road for a year or so.. have to break in my bottom... LOL.. Cheers Ken..

We left Figueira Da Foz and moved up the coast to Aviero. Well, actually, Aviero is not right on the coast, but close enough. Grand Canal complete with gondolas in the city centre. Lots of high end shopping. Very Venice like. Loads of bus tours as well. Very pretty and picturesque place. We are in a great hotel just off the main drag. As per usual, everybody here is so nice. Had a great wine this evening - a Kopke red from the Duoro. No wonder Kopke makes great port!
Speaking of port, that's where we are going tomorrow - Porto. Believe it or not, we have not had a drop of port since we got to Portugal. Tomorrow that will change. Colin

Hello Porto People! At least I assume you are swilling there, based on your last trip entry. Have been enjoying them immensely, by the way. Cheers, Patrizzio!
