Rainy Day Fireside Blues: Tuesday, March 1st!

We should not be simply fighting evil in the name of good, but struggling against the certainties of people who claim always to know where good and evil are to be found. -Tzvetan Todorov, philosopher (b. 1 Mar 1939)

A quick note that I had sent to Francesca's family. You would all really enjoy this place! Just back from a great wine shop/ deli with lot's of French goodies. Fabulous baguette with lovely cheeses and ham, with a glass of Provence Rose for Francesca, and a cold local beer for me. Like being in France, but in the Caribbean, a beautiful combo! Cheers, Gregg

Hi from St Martin! Some pics from our balcony at " Le Petit Hotel" on Grand Case Beach. A bit of paradise, with wonderful hosts in this small boutique hotel.

A short walk or golf card ride to numerous superb French restaurants, bistros, local Caribbean restaurants, all as good as France itself. Each morning is fresh squeezed juices, fruit, croissants etc, along with Cafe au Lait. Then a long beach walk and run ( maybe), followed by reading and the dilemma of where to dine, or which beach to visit. ( our own right here is great, however there is also a wonderful number of different beaches on both the French and Dutch side.

We are also here for the " Heineken 360 " sailing race which is quite an annual event, which we will take in- looks very exciting, with a lot of events around the festivities! My earlier cruise pics cut out due to the satellite internet , so will resend a few from this stronger signal! Francesca is reading on the balcony and listening to the waves, currently beautiful sun, breeze, and about 77 degrees.
Tonight is a local street party, with lots of local venous, foods etc- should be fun! We'll stay in touch, and hope that all is well with everyone. Cheers, Gregg & Francesca

Hi Lurch and Grogg! Great to hear from you. Life sounds wonderful, nay magical, indeed! Not sure if you remember or not but we spent 10 days on St Martin, back in 2011, (I think!), when we drove to Dallas to stay with Ruth/Randy, and New Orleans for a week, with Lynne and Peter, friends from Naramata. After New Orleans we drove back to Dallas and flew from there to St Martin to stay with Ski and Ronaldo at the American University of the Caribbean where he was teaching. Had an absolute blast as you can well imagine. Even a bit of bridge as Ron's sister and brother-in-law were there as well and both played. Roads were a bit narrow for biking but would have been great with all the tough, tough hills!

Am all alone at the moment as Lady Dar took the bus to Vancouver this past Sunday. Enjoy the rest of your time in the sun. Rainy day here so probably no riding but plenty of firewood to chop. Travel safely. Fondestos and Cheers, to you both, Patrizzio!

We are also working with another group of friends for Sat March 12 which unfortunately precludes me from the rugby sevens. We can suggest for Fri March 11 lunch at Au Comptoir (on 4th across from Whole Foods) at 12 noon or earlier because it gets very busy? Please let us know if this is OK. I just tried to photo a lovely seagull on our window sill, but he got away! Cheers Bill & Denise

Hello Mover Person with a Weak Back! I know you will be careful, Wild Bill, but I trust you don't overdo things! Buona Fortuna with move, however! Au Comptoir sounds wonderful indeed. We will certainly adjust our schedule to be there whenever you suggest. Coincidentally, had a message from Grogg just minutes before yours arrived!. He and Lurch have been on a Caribbean cruise and are now staying in St Martin. Fondestos to my Darling, Denise Dangereuse, and to you, Guillermo Selvaggio. Cheers, to you both, Patrizzio! Pic: One of Grogg's snaps!

Hi Pat How do have the energy to write so much?! We had a busy day battling the wind & rain here today but we got Julie moved without buggering up my back. All is calm now and our sea gull pet is back again - see attached photo.
We'll confirm later before our date at Au Comptoir. Cheers Bill Hi Patrick, Could not figure out to attach with my prior email - took photo about an hour ago.
Enjoy, Bill

Hello Wildlife Photographer! Great shot of seagull. Looks almost like a piece of sculpture! Glad move went swimmingly, so to speak, in spite of weather, and that your back fared well! Looking forward to Au Comptoir as I've not been before. Not sure about Lady Dar. How do you have the energy to taste so much wine? Practice! Practice! Practice! Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hello Duhlink, aka "Wifey"! Just received this from Wild Bill. I replied that spot would be fine. Trust you agree. Bit of light rain today so no riding but plenty of fire wood to chop. Trust you are enjoying the Big City! Much love, Sad and veddy, veddy lonely for his wifey, Forlorn Patrizzio!

PS: This just in from The Narcolept. She fell asleep, in the back seat on way home from yesterday's hike!

Hello, Patrick: You truly are an amazing writer!!! Did I not say yesterday that you should be writing novels?!?!!? Thank you for all the honourable mentions. I know that Pam LOVED the hike and it was so nice to see her warmly welcomed into the hiking group. We are a friendly, huggy fun & interesting group to hike with. Happy to hear that you are behaving yourself while wifey is away. I will miss her on tomorrow's Wed. walk day. Ciao for now! Mary Lee :-)

Hello to my Favourite Narcoleptic Whirlwind! You are far too, too kind and generous with your comments on my writing ability but your words are, of course, much appreciated! I simply enjoy the process of trying to express myself and wrestling to refine my thoughts. Naturally, I am pleased if my musings are enjoyed but I don't wish to insist my efforts on others. Coincidentally, just had a message from Lady Dar, seemingly emulating your level of activity in the Big City!

Going to meet Julia for lunch and then on to Robyn's and to see movie Brooklyn. Raining here as well. Staying at Chloë's tonight and meeting Nancy for breakfast tomorrow before bus. Could you pick up book for me, on hold at library, Oliver Sacks' newest. Love you, Corinne, aka wifey!

Must away as Lady Dar's list of chores is getting even longer as you can tell! Since it is a rainy day here as well, probably no riding but plenty of firewood to chop. Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizzio! Pic: Firewood needing chopping and splitting!

Hi! Pat: Glad that you are doing your 'Honey To Do List' and behaving yourself while 'The Boss' is away. That's nice that Lady Dar is keeping busy and having lots of fun with her friends in the Big City.

Thanks for the pic to show me that you are a busy beaver chopping wood today and the lovely beach scene which I thought you may have taken yesterday on our lovely hike. Now that you know that I have 'Narcolepsy' - don't be offended if I nod off when you are talking to me. Your detailed story-telling may put me in a narcoleptic state. As soon as I stop talking, eating or moving, I tend to nod off - just a warning so you know in the future.

Was planning on going snowshoeing today but the morning rain scared me off and I didn't want to catch a cold or chill. I've been feeling a bit congested & stuffy nose this morning ..................... so, lots of hot water with lemon & ginger to kill those nasty germs. Met & shook hands with lots of people volunteering at the BC games on the weekend and again at the volunteer dinner last night, so not sure what I picked up and from who. Better go make lunch for hubby ............ his tummy must be growling by now. Keep on chomping .................. I mean chopping away there!!! Mary Lee :-)

Hi Mary Lee! Sorry to hear about your congestion and stuffy nose! I usually put rum in my hot lemon water! Pamela was at Oasis this evening but I didn't recognize her at first! Mary Tinka was there as well, but no Al! Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hello Master Carpenter! Trust you are well. Hope your legal matters are improving but somehow doubt that this will be the case.

On a computer related matter, Chloë's computer seems to be ready to give up the ghost. I gave it to her as a Christmas present in 2009 so now about 7 years old. According to her: "...it is in such good shape physically but I guess it really is all about memory and computer compatibility as being 7 almost 8 years old is ancient in computer land said my genius at the Apple bar!" I'm sure she has had my money's worth BUT she is taking an on-line property management course, via UBC's Sauder School of Business, and really needs something that works.

We are coming in to Vancouver on March 10th for Cuffed and the Rugby Sevens, (Did you do anything about attending or are you not interested?), so Mme Coriandre will bring her her MacBook Air, (She is leaving her mini-Ipad when she returns to Penticton.), until we figure out what to do about a replacement. In the interim, I was wondering what you might think about upgrading the memory in her old MacBook the way you did to my old laptop. Is it possible? Do you have the time and requisite ability/skill. Not sure what can be done on various models, etc., not that I'm doubting your capabilities. At any rate, let me know what you think and if it might be possible I'll ask Chloë to arrange dropping off the computer with any money that you will need should this favour go ahead. Please don't hesitate to say no, for whatever reasons, but just thought I'd inquire as last upgrade is now being used to run the large-screen projector in the Rumpus Room! Unbelievable porno flics!

Dropped off my Brodie hybrid this afternoon at Freedom, bike shop but a few blocks away. Am having larger mountain bike tires put on as I want to start riding the KVR, (It is paved here in town but most of trail, (Naramata, Kaleden, Summerland and beyond), is not and the commuting tires are not really best for some of the sandy, gravel surfaces. Cheers, Ragin'! All the best, Il Conduttore!
Pic: Don't lecture me on resolution as Aarturo insisted he wanted it higher for hiking shots!

Hi Dad, Yes I will explain the typed note, very thoughtful of you to do that. She has sad days as can be imagined but the good thing is they had a very good last day together and the fact that her pregnancy is going so well is a happy distraction and source of joy for her and the whole family.

It is distressing about my computer is it is in such good shape physically but I guess it really is all about memory and computer compatibility as being 7 almost 8 years old is ancient in computer land said my genius at the Apple bar, how will you swing replacement? do you know a guy? will something fall off a truck?? ;) Will not do anything with it and yes of course you can have it for the projector.

Nana and I have had a nice time, she is spending the night again tonight I think as she has plans with Robin but is not sure if she will sleep there. Love you,

Hi Chloë and Whirling Social Dervish! Must say I continue to be quite impressed with your writing skills! Keep up the great work!!! Please pass along my sympathies and best wishes for her pregnancy when you see Kari.
Have just sent a note to Ragin' outlining your computer's old age and the necessity for a machine that works! In terms of a replacement that might have fallen off a truck, do you need another MacBook or will a MacBook Air suffice? Latter doesn't have a slot for CDs, etc., so not sure if your course work might require such. My current feeling about technology is to purchase the cheapest model that will suffice, at the time, as machines are becoming relatively obsolete more and more quickly. Anyway, let me know what you think and we'll plan accordingly.

Had a note from Whirlwind Nana and I gather she is staying with you this evening. Please tell her that Library wouldn't allow me to collect her stinkin' hold!
Must away as I'm about to make some split pea soup in slow cooker! Love and Cheers, Dad/Patrizzio, Galloping Gourmet! PS: I see Ayn's Dream Café picture and post has caused quite a stir! "Adorbed" the comments!!!

Hi D, Glad you're impressed by my skills, as I am not impressed by the porno projector image, yuck!!!

Thanks for emailing Ragin' please let me know what he says as now I have no ability to get into my computer, it is completely frozen and am unable to use the iPad you gave me as its too old as well. You sure are right about technology becoming obsolete!! I'm not sure all the cost differences between a MacBook and an AirMac but the one advantage of having CD/DVD capability is that I don't have a stereo or way to burn music/pictures but I do think you can buy those parts separately, do you know? I'll wait to hear what the master computer genius says. Thanks, love you. XX

Hi Goils! Just wondering, Duhlink, if you are planning on booking an appointment between March 1st and May 31st at Enamel Dental Centre? If so, your name will be entered into a draw for a custom made tooth whitening kit valued at $475! Talk about marketing!!!

Haven't heard from Ragin' yet. How was Brooklyn? Just back from Oasis where I saw Alive Inside: A Story of Music and Memory, a 2014 American documentary film directed and produced by Michael Rossato-Bennett. As you might recall, "the film deals with the subject of people suffering from Alzheimer's disease and how music therapy can help and ease their suffering." Quite extraordinary, absolutely remarkable results so a magnificent testament to those who care and know enough to unlock the minds and memories of those condemned by age, circumstance and disease to literal solitary confinement, or worse, of course, within the halls of care facilities. Didn't expect to see Oliver Sacks, (So shortly after being denied to collect your library book, [Was it On the Move: A Life?], by him!) but he was one of the "experts" interviewed to comment on the effect of music on the human brain and mind. Well worth seeing, for myriad reasons, not the least of which is to witness the stunning transformation, (often hilariously funny and heart-breaking, at one and the same time), which occurs to otherwise completely unresponsive individuals.
When I arrived for pizza I met Pamela, the woman who drove Mary Lee and I to the hike on Monday. She was there with her husband Bill so it was a chance to meet him as well. Pam had chatted with Jim about series so that is how she knew about the evening. I invited them back for a drink but they declined as I gather it was a late night last night with dinner for the volunteers of the BC Winter Games. Bill was responsible for organizing the event. I believe this is the business he is in, from what little Pam has said. Anyway, they are both very active so I might well ride with them at some point. They both have done the GranFondo as well as some triathlon events, I gather.

Getting to know some of the people at Oasis now so it was a most pleasant evening all around. The discussion afterwards was quite interesting, hearing people's stories related to the film's subject. Back home by 9:00 am as film wasn't as long as one last week. My split pea soup is burbling away so I'm looking forward to having it for breakfast. Also preparing a turnip puff for tomorrow's dinner, in honour of Lady Dar's return. Will do some thick pork chops, in coconut milk, in slow cooker. Really tenderizes them! Time to brush my teeth and then read in bed. Haven't read any P.D. James in years and I'm really enjoying A Certain Justice. Adam Dalgliesh is just about to be called by Hubert St John Langton, Head of Chambers, in Pawlet Court, after Venetia Aldridge, QC, a distinguished criminal lawyer, is found dead, at her desk in her Middle Temple chambers! And I'm all alone in the house!!! Might have to sleep with a meat cleaver under my pillow! Love and Cheers to all my Big City Girls, Dad/Patrizzio!

Dear Patrick, Thought you might like this! Love, Jean & John Hi Jean! Quite a story although it might be used against anti-gun lobbyists! Cheers to you both, Patrizzio! Hi Lady Dar!Latest from Jean! Sometimes I wonder! Told her that it would probably be used against anti-gun lobbyists. Didn't mention I'd seen it years ago. Love, Patrizzio!
