Backfill Blue Sky Blues: Tuesday, February 23rd!

Leaving home in a sense involves a kind of second birth in which we give birth to ourselves. -Robert Neelly Bellah, sociologist and author (23 Feb 1927-2013)

Up to a bright, crisp, cloudless day so looking forward to riding to Black Sage Road, south of Oliver if wind isn't too, too much of a factor. Had thought I might revisit "The Wall" out of OK Falls but am afraid the road work there might force me to touch the Dreaded Burning Ground!

Would you please send me Clara's email. I guess I have it wrong. This is the message I got back."your message has been enqueued and undeliverable for 2 days" I don't even know what that means! Sandee

Hi Sandee! Correct address is the following. Try that. With respect to a visit over Easter, we were wondering if Saturday night would be convenient to be Freeloaders! Have both been enjoying sunny weather of late, probably even warmer where you are bivouaced. Cool and crisp but still fab! Off for a ride. Think I'll head for Black Sage Road, out of Oliver, parallel to 97 and weather permitting, will do much the same ride when we come to visit. Cora Lee will drive as she'll be bringing cases of wine! Hello to Arv. He didn't take any books. Should we bring some? Cheap rental at $20/day! Chat soon. Cheers, Patrizzio!

PS: "Your message has been enqueued and undeliverable for 2 days.", means Clara is still annoyed at you for losing to Dusty and myself at bridge!!! I'm playing in a fund raiser for Grandmothers for Africa on March 4th, with friend, Jos, from hiking group. She and Pam, another hiker, were over on Saturday for a fun-filled evening of bridge. Cora Lee will be working at fund raiser as she just joined GFA. Clarisse and I played together, twice, at similar events in Vancouver. Pics: Saturday Night Live! Big horn we came across on yesterday's hike to McIntyre Bluff just north of Oliver.

Saturday is fine, any day or days. I realize mts needs net, not com! I'm learning. Thanks for pics, that sheep is huge. Sandee Hi again, Sandee! Glad new address worked! It happens to everyone. I had an incorrect address a week or so ago and couldn't figure out what was wrong. Was missing a "0" in last part of name and finally noticed error! We'll be in touch about visit once we have confirmed a few things with friends who will be at Spirit Ridge. Funnily enough, above problem was in their daughter's email address and I was trying to contact Nicole about the Easter weekend! Thanks again. Cheers, Patrizzio!.

Hello Patrick, Thanks for your email just reading it fully today.  So sorry that we will not be able to get together with you and Corinne while you are here. Your schedule is chock a block full that's for sure. Know you will enjoy.

Unfortunately on the Friday I am attending the SLAIS Research Day.  Keep thinking maybe we could meet for a 6:00 a.m. rising sun rendezvous or a Midnight soiree!  Alas such is life. We do understand. Tip is okay I think.  Had hoped that she might join us for supper if you had been able to come as Jim is in Thailand at the moment.  Keep in touch please.  As ever, Jo-Anne and Colin

Hi again, Jo-Anne/Colin! Thanks for your last message, Jo-Anne. As you know, we are driving into Vancouver on Thursday, afternoon of March 10th. It now turns out that friends we will be staying with had forgotten about an engagement that evening so am just wondering if we could manage a drink then. All going well, we probably won't be in town until somewhere between 7:30 pm-8:00 pm. If this works for you two, supper is probably too late, (We plan to "picnic" in the car, en route!), but a visit and a a few drinks would be grand. Furthermore, I suggest we play host at the Carters as we can drink Mick's malt! Let me know what you think and we'll plan accordingly. Understand completely if Thursday is not convenient either but just thought I'd suggest it, given seeming impossibility of other times. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hello Patrick This sounds great to me!!  We will plan accordingly--when you say let's play host at the Carter's not sure what you meant--excuse my ignorance.
Cheers for now Jo-Anne

Hi again, Jo-Anne! I was simply suggesting that you and Colin come to where we will be staying. The Carters live on
14th Ave, not far from Arbutus, so I thought, if it was convenient, you two could pop down and we'd have a wild party while the owners are out! We'd phone as soon as we've unlocked their wine cellar and malt cabinet. Anyway, let me know where is best for you. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Jo-Anne will be there, but I must decline. I do not feel comfortable with the idea of raiding the Scotch cabinet of someone I do not know.  Now, your Scotch cabinet, that is another thing. If you feel inclined to come up the incline, my Scotch cabinets are open. If you are around on Sunday, we will be having corned beef and cabbage with Gary, Di, and Nick. Colin

Hi Colin! I was only kidding about "raiding" our hosts liquor stash so you need not feel uncomfortable as booze will be ours! Nevertheless, we'd like to see you as well so if you don't want to descend the decline we certainly don't mind scaling the incline. Let us know your preference.

Would certainly be terrific to see Gazebo, Di and Nick but I'm going to be at the rugby Sevens tournament all day Sunday, Cora Lee at Cuffed. If they are around on Friday, perhaps we could arrange a java somewhere. If in touch before then, please suggest this. At any rate, best wishes to them all. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Patrick Hope you can wend you way up the incline would love to have you and Corinne over for tea, coffee, vino and or Colin's scotch!  See you then!
Jo-Anne

Hola Corinne & Pat, The sun is pouring in the windows here at Ukiyo on Galiano. I am trying to get rid of a bad cough and throat infection. George is giving me lots of TLC. I just wanted to say how much we are looking forward to our visit with you in your new home and town. It is really beginning to feel like Spring. The snowbells and crocuses are blooming and we have a red tulip and pink azalea bush about to pop. The garlic is about 4 inches out of the ground already.

Do you have snow in town? How did you enjoy the snowshoeing? I am sure it came naturally to you. It is a terrific way to enjoy nature. The last couple of days have been sunny after what felt like weeks of rain and darkness. This lovely weather has done wonders for our souls.

Yesterday we were down at the Point and saw at least 6 eagles watching for prey and 2 otters that may have been interested in Morita had they the chance! We sat on the rocks and had a picnic as well as a wee beverage. We saw only one other human being as we left the park. It was a very restorative day.

Thanks for all your newsy notes. It sounds like you have embraced and been embraced by your wonderful new community. We have our tool belts and onesies ready to help with all your projects. George as you know is a Master carpenter. Take good care and enjoy all your activities. Hasta luego! Jane xo

Hello Streptococcus Goil and Giggenheimer! Thanks for your last, newsy message but terribly sorry to hear of your nasty cough and throat infection. Quite obvious that the tight-fisted, Master Carpenter is not pouring enough of his porch cleaner to burn the bugs out of your wind pipe! Sun should help so trust you are feeling better and back to normal soon! Glorious here, as well, but probably not as warm, given what you say about garlic and other flowers. That being said, the two Mandevilla that we have in the Rumpus Room, (Your bedroom when you roll into Tummler's Reach!), are showing new growth, so spring is in the air. (More below.) No, no snow here, except in the odd parking lot, insulated with sand, or on the higher hills. Cool and crisp on the weekend so quite a bit of fresh snow on the latter, very picturesque.

What wonderful wildlife to see. Picnic would be even more magical as a result, I'm sure! Don't worry about your tool belts. Just bring a corkscrew or a bottle opener! Yes, we have certainly found a wonderful community. Per esempio, off this evening to see a film at Oasis, the UC Lady Dar has joined. Good friends, Jim French and his wife, Carol, (not a hiker), and Pam Krannitz, from hiking group, belong as well. Part of church's Lens on Lent: Living Lent Through the Frame of Film:

The Railway Man is a 2013 British–Australian war film directed by Jonathan Teplitzky. It is an adaptation of the bestselling autobiography of the same name by Eric Lomax, and stars Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman, Jeremy Irvine and Stellan Skarsgård. It premiered at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival.

During World War II, Eric Lomax is a British officer who is captured by the Japanese in Singapore and sent to a Japanese POW camp where he is forced to work on the Thai-Burma Railway north of the Malay Peninsula. During his time in the camp as one of the Far East prisoners of war, Lomax is tortured by the Kempetai for building a radio receiver from spare parts. This is apparently due to his falling under suspicion of being a spy for supposedly using the British news broadcast receiver as a transmitter of military intelligence. His only intention, in fact, had been to use the device as a morale booster for himself and his fellow prisoner-slaves. The torture depicted includes beatings, rape and waterboarding. Years later and still suffering the psychological trauma of his wartime experiences, with the help of his wife Patti and best friend Finlay, Lomax decides to find and confront one of his captors who had escaped prosecution as a war criminal. He returns to the scene of his torture after he has tracked down Japanese secret police officer Takashi Nagase "in an attempt to let go of a lifetime of bitterness and hate".

In an interesting twist, both of us read, a few months ago, The Narrow Road to the Deep North, the Man Booker Prize for 2014, by Richard Flanagan. A must read. An incredibly powerful book, dealing with Australian prisoners of war on the same railroad, made even more compelling, for us, inasmuch as some of it takes place in Adelaide, in locales we know or are at least familiar with. Deals with many of the same issues as the film, this time from a doctor's perspective. Highly recommend it. At any rate, you can stock up on any titles while here: One book, two bottles of very expensive chain climber!

Please note that I've graduated from porch cleaner to chain climber, a natural progression. Much the same as from Baby Duck to Mateus Rosé or Chianti Raffia!!! You bring the Galiano sand and we'll supply the beeswax candles, from Cawston! [Durston bee hives, from Dauphin, winter there! Millions of bees, astride mini-spider-web filament road bikes, ride out each Fall, creating their own tail wind! Why don't we have wings? One of Dusty's uncles owned the business but it was sold a few years back. New owners kept the name, however.]

Fondestos from Lady Dardriveeling, watching The Young and the Useless. Cheers, Patrizzio! Pics: Latest update from site next door. Where Giorgio will be sleeping! Lucky for him that he isn't wearing concrete riding shoes!

Dear Customer: Your invoice is attached. Thank you for your business - we appreciate it very much. Sincerely, Accent Living & Leisure

Hello very efficient Accent Living! Thanks so much for invoice and manual. Much appreciated. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Mary Lee! Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. Busy day yesterday. Wonderful, wonderful hike. We missed you although knew you were busy doing good deeds! Turned out that I didn't even get outside, except to chop a bit of wood. Decided I'd try to catch up on email and give my aging frame a bit of a rest. Hope to ride Black Sage domani. I'm planning to go on Al's hike on Thursday. Any interest? Let me know,. I'm happy to collect you. Cheers, Trizzio!

Hi! Patrizzio: Thanks for your newsy email and pics of the construction next door. Hope they are keeping the noise down. I've been busy with Gill & Phil Robson since they came back from Sedona, AZ. I've been powerwalking with Gill for 3 days and last night we were at friends for dinner and tonight, they made us dinner and staying the night. Tomorrow morning, we are driving them to Kelowna airport to catch their flight to Australia/NZ. Sorry, I missed the nice hike on Monday but my duties at the Soupeteria kitchen was really appreciated since they were short-handed with volunteers. I walked home from the soup kitchen at 1:00 pm and went on a 1.5 hr. bike ride in the afternoon. Today, I went on a 2.5 hr. snowshoeing day at Nickel Plate - another trail breaking & knee deep, bush wacking day in the snow.

I can't go on Al's Thurs. hike. I'm meeting up with my team leader Thurs. morning for instructions & direction on my volunteering with the BC Games on Sat. I will be there for Monday's hike. See U then!! Pls tell Lady Dar that I won't be going on Wed. walk tomorrow since we are going to the airport. Cheers!! Mary Lee :-)

Hello Power Walker, Chauffeur and BC Games Volunteer! Almost out of breath just listing some of the hats you wear!!! Please pass along best wishes and Bon Voyage to Gilliana and Fillipo. I know they have been extremely busy but would have enjoyed seeing them. Lady Dar did bump into Gilliana at the library as you probably know.

Really enjoyed The Railway Man although it is a very difficult film to watch. Both Otto and Pam were there, along with Jim French, of course. Pizza before screening was delish. An extremely heart-wrenching, wince-making, painful account of what happened to the prisoners enslaved to work on the construction of the Thai-Burma Railway and the terrible psychological/emotional toll it took on those who somehow managed to survive. Still, a wonderful testament to the human spirit and the power of love. To my mind, Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman were simply superb.

You'll be missed, domani, by The Flatlanders, I'm sure, and on Thursday, by Al's group. Fondestos from Lady Dar to Famiglia Robson, and to you, as well, Mary Lee. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Pauline! Sorry I've not replied sooner. Not to worry about dinner as we plan to "picnic" in the car, en route!. All going well, we probably won't be in town until somewhere between 7:30 pm-8:00 pm. Just wondering if we should camp out somewhere until you are home or would it be possible to leave a key somewhere, if you feel comfortable doing this. Not a big deal as we can always visit Flamin' and Sarge until you are back from your golf dinner. Just let us know what works for you and we'll plan accordingly. Thanks and  Cheers, Patrizzio!

Greetings to all Gentle Breeze hikers: What a beautiful morning we are having... Let's enjoy the day. This Thursday I will not be going snow shoeing. If there is a strong desire in the ranks for a snow trip, please, someone organize a trip. You have the mailing list.

Instead of snow shoeing I will be going boot hiking to the S. end of Cartwright Mt, starting from the Summerland land fill area and heading for the Deer Ridge. It is going to be an easy to moderate hike, lasting approx. 3 hrs. There will be some children in the group, which I hope won't be an impediment to enjoying the terrain, the companionship and the outdoor experience. We meet at the IGA parking lot at 9:00 am; the southerners may car pool from Pent. HH, meet there at 8:40. Cheers, Al

Hi Al! Just a quick note to thank you again for wonderful hike. Really impressed with your close-ups of various stages of Buttercups and single of Bitteroot! Cheers, Patrizzio!
Thanks so much once again Patrick for the detailed interesting composition! A++ And for the fantastic pictures... Quite a group!!...You Rock👍 Elle

Hi Teach! Thanks for the high marks! Very generous and kind of you. Simply glad you enjoyed the snaps and account. I'm planning to go on Al's hike on Thursday so almost back to regular, twice-a-week, creative blundering routine. Time for you to head home and join us! Stay well. Cheers, Trizzio, Grade 7, Home Room Teacher, Ms Blezy!

awesome photos, great story, Patrick, It was a glorious day! til next time, Hanneke  Hi Hanneke! Will you be joining Al's hike on Thursday or cc-skiing? Snow-shoeing? Lady Dar plans to join the Flatlanders Luncheon Trek tomorrow! Her ankle is better but still sore so I hope she takes it easy. Stay well. Cheers, Trizzio!

Beautiful memories Patrick, always nice to do the hike again in picture and word.
And have another laugh. Thank you for being our OF reporter. Ciao. Jos
Hello My Darling Josinta, Bridge Partner Extraordinaire, and NN Aarturo, as well, of course! Take care of the Sensitive, New Age Cave Dweller! Cheers, Patrizzio!

Check out this email from the real estate agent! Hi Chloe, So nice to meet you and Maya on Sunday. Apologies for having to run off like that, it would have been nice to spend some more time with you two but the open house was swamped from start to finish on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. We did accept offers last night and I think you will be blown away by what happened.

We ended up receiving 9 offers. 8 of them were subject free with deposit
cheques in hand, all of them were over our asking price of $420,000 to
start. It came down to 3 very serious offers and they duked it out. Last
buyer standing was a subject free bid of $495,000 that closes on March 3.
That sets a new building record by $55,000. If that doesn't put a smile on
your face, I don't know what will. I'm still smiling, as are the sellers of
303. The winning buyers were ecstatic too.

With 9 offers and only one successful buyer, it is safe to say that demand
to get into the building is extremely high right now. I may have let it slip
that there might be another one coming up in the building sometime soon.
Virtually every single losing group asked if they could see it as soon as it
becomes available. The momentum is there right now and is something you
could really capitalize on, if you're ready. And just to clarify, selling now doesn't mean you have to move out right away, we could build in a long close to give us the opportunity to find your next condo in the area. We can talk about that.

As I mentioned, I can get this done for you in a really efficient and
non-intrusive way. I would really only need access to the unit four times in
just over a week. I have attached an example of a listing schedule as a PDF
here for you to review.

Essentially, it is an hour to shoot pictures, video and measurements on
visit #1. Visits #'s 2-4 include a one hour sneaky peek open house on a
Thursday evening and 2 public opens on the Saturday and Sunday. Offers come
in on the Monday or Tuesday evening and it should be sold firm just a few
hours after offer presentation, if all goes well.

I know the building inside and out, I've lived two blocks away for almost 20
years now and can sell this neighborhood like no one else. And I've got a
waiting list of buyers ready to throw money at you. Plus I'm really fun to
work with. :)

Check out this amazing company I use to shoot the most stunning photos and
3D tours: http://toursler.com/2001-wall-street-303
