Bob Altwein Asia overland, from the archive Came across this old photograph from October 1975. Back then i accepted a severance package (for all employees), being offered by Volkswagen, in Wolfsburg, West Germany. From July of that year to early March of 1976, i slowly made my way home to Vancouver, via Asia. The first leg of this journey was from Istanbul to Delhi, followed by a flight to Bangkok and then further touring through the Far East. After 3 1/4 years away from Canada, home was a huge adjustment. It took a few months to find suitable work but also for the counter-culture shock to go away. En route, this photo was taken between Herat and Kandahar, Afghanistan.

Three Germans in a four door VW Transporter, were kind enough to invite me to join them from Mashad, Iran to Islamabad, Pakistan. This photo has not been "spotted" so excuse all the dust on the image. One of the Germans took the picture while the other two are on the right. The three Afghani nomads appeared from nowhere, while we were stopped for this photo op. There is also slimmer version of myself over on the left. I was 25 years old in this shot. Image taken with my old miniature Rollei 35 film camera – now with my daughter.

Hi Bob! Trust you are well. Corinne's parents flew back to Manitoba today, after a wonderful visit, and I am finally managing to wade through a backlog of messages. Really enjoyed the post and snap from the archives, October '75! Cheers, Patrizzio!
