Colonel Klink's KVR Blues: Tuesday, May 10th!

The soul is the same in all living creatures, although the body is different. -Hippocrates, physician (460-c.377 BCE)

Hi Sarge! Are you planning to stay with us on Friday night? You are more than welcome but we are out to a lecture at The Meadow Lark Festival at 7:00 pm. I have already booked a barrel tasting at Black Widow for Sunday morning as we plan to go to the Farmer's Market on Saturday morning with Zoe and Matt. Afterwards, we will take them to Orofino for the pizza party. At any rate, let me know your thoughts and we'll plan accordingly. As well, we can chat about the weekend when we are in town this weekend. Must away as I'm off to ride the KVR from Penticton, near the end of airport runway, along west side of Skaha to OK Fallls with The Babes from hiking group! Cheers, Patrizzio!

We will not be staying at your place either night. I was just trying to book the barrel tasting. Wayne Don't want to run around for 2 days so if we could do it o. Saturday that would be good We can do both on Sat. Wayne

Hi Flamin' and Sarge! That sounds fine. You will probably be finished at Black Widow around the same time we will be back from the Market. You can give us a shout and either come to our place to say hello, freshen up, etc., or go directly to Orofino. The pick-up party starts at noon and goes until 3:00 pm, as you know, and it takes about 30 minutes to drive there from here. Look forward to seeing you then, Flamin', (Have a grand time in Calgary!), Sarge on Friday. Must away as we are hosting a table of bridge at 6:30 pm. Fondestos from Lady Darjeeling, just putting the finishing touches to another panel of the back patio fence! Cheers, Patrizzio!

Depending on what time we get on the go we might join you at the market first and then go to Black Widow. Hi Sarge! Okay, let's play it by ear! Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hello Patrick Is your gathering 2-5 pm at Chloe's?? I am at a conference but it should be over about 3:00 -- would love to celebrate with you. Not sure if i am reading this correctly--please help me. Cheers Jo-Anne

Hi Marps! Yes, our anniversary bash is at Chloë's, (Off Powell), from 2:00 am-5:00 pm, or longer, so you are most welcome to come after your conference is over. Certainly look forward to seeing you both. Must away as we are hosting bridge shortly. Cheers, Patrizzio! PS: Today's ride below. Pics: Our new tree, planted by the city this morning!!!!

Guillermo came to collect me around 8:30 am just as the city workers were unloading the lovely tree, what I know as Crataegus x mordenensis 'Toba' but most untutored would call Toba Hawthorn, to be planted, on the boulevard, in front of our house! While I slathered on sun-screen, Yermo chatted with Lady Dar and then we took of to rendezvous with The Sisterhood at the Dog Park near Windsor Plywood. Hell-bent was the first to arrive and while she and Guillermo bonded I took the opportunity to explore a number of nearbye side streets. Back at just before 9:00 am and after greeting those I knew and being introduced to Carolina Choo-Choo, we took off, making for the Channel Parkway bike path.

South to cross the highway, via a tunnel, heavily graveled, with large, loose pebbles, underneath its surface, just before it starts to curve up and away towards Kaleden, and thence through the campgrounds, Wright's Beach Camp, I believe, on the other side to start riding on the  KVR roadbed itself. First time for me so I was in seventh heaven just to be here. The road surface is very good, at this point, and the situation, almost idyllic. Skaha was an almost ripple-less,  breathtaking Mediterranean blue, the silence almost complete except for occasional, delicious to the ear, bird-song. The underbrush and trees are well back, mostly, from the riding surface so one feels like one is in a tunnel without a roof, or if one, a cloudless, piercingly blue, blue sky.

We zipped along, Outboard Motor Mary and Hell-Bent way, way ahead and we, Guillermo and I, in hot pursuit, needed powerful binoculars, and then a radio telescope, on short-term loan from The Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory, on White Lake Road, just to catch their distant silhouettes disappearing around a curve or into a copse or stand of brush. Were finally able to catch up when they stopped at the Gilliana Memorial Comfort Station at the Banbury Green RV Park, I think. Managed to take the first official Group Photo here and then we were off again.

A short stretch of tarmac within the confines of the small park itself and then the going becomes a bit "iffy" as there are quite a few lengths of sandy trail south of the park. I might be wrong but it seems to me that most of this sand washes down the cliff face to silt the trail. Not impassable, especially if you know what is ahead and can gear down enough to slither your way through. Once one has negotiated a few of these stretches it becomes a tad easier to ride them out although if you don't have quite enough speed to keep from stalling you will probably have to walk your way out of the dry "quicksand"! Guillermo and I were able pass without mishap and felt pretty pleased with ourselves until Choo-Choo came shooting up behind us, vaulting herself into the lead, racing like a bat out of hell until we reached the pavement on the outskirts of Kaleden, throwing up her hands in victory, shouting that she was the winner!

And The Brotherhood is accused of being competitive! Anyway, I took the opportunity to take a few snaps from the lakeside until the rest of the gang joined the group and we made our way into Kaleden itself. I was riding with Colonel Klink at the time and she offered a number of interesting facts about the history of Kaledn itself and some of the politics of the trial right-of-way we'd just ridden over. Next stop was near Ponderosa Point Resort, a gorgeous lakeshore spot with a fabulous sandy beach. Then on towards the long, well-constructed wooden bridge which takes one over the narrowing lake as it begins to turn itself into the Okanagan River again as it nears OK Falls. Stopped for a few shots here and then on into OK Falls to meet at Kenyon Park, I believe. Stopped here for one last group shot as Katarina, Mary Mary Quite Contrary and I were to return via Eastside while rest would loop back to Penticton on the KVR.

Bid our companions goodbye and then made for home ourselves. Had our work cut out as wind was coming out of the north, (15 kph but felt a bit stronger at times), and we had to struggle against it as well as negotiate the hills between OK Falls and just above McLean Creek Road. Still, we laboured away and didn't do too, too badly, Katarina and I changing up to allow a bit of a rest while the other drafted behind. Mary Mary Sanctuary lived up to her name by finding shelter from the wind for all of our time on Eastside, preferring to save her breath for talking rather than riding into the head wind! However, we had the last laugh as we peeled off at Skaha Lake Park to let her fight her own selfish way up Main Street South and then along Government!

We then made for the bike path along Channel Parkway and rode together, chatting amicably about bridge, for the most part, until we waved goodbye at the Green Mountain Road bridge as The Naramatian was returning to the Dog Park to collect her car. I continued north along the bike path, coming out to cross over the channel near the SS Sicamous. Then I took Riverside to do a couple of loops thereabouts as I wanted to add enough distance to log 51 km by the time I was back home. After a bit of necessary dipsy-doodling there I took Lakeshore to Ellis and then roared south, the wind now behind me again.

When I reached Burns I turned up it as I wanted to see if the crew had finished planting the new tree. In fact, Dustin, the city worker, I later learned, was just putting the finishing touches to the space around the trunk, spading wood chips into the large rectangle surround in the boulevarde. And who should be cycling down the street but Dog-Tired Guillermo, drained by the punishing pace set by Colonel Klink and her minions! We chatted briefly, both remarking on how wonderful and outing it had been so Hip Hip Hooray for The Sisterhood! Map and Stats for ride:

Hello Colonel Klink's Valkyrie! Just a quick note to thank everyone for the marvellous outing. Wonderful scenery, even more wonderful riding companions! I trust we'll do many more in the months to come. Have appended a field report, if interested. Please pass along album, etc., to those of Klinks' KVR'ers for whom I've not email addresses. Thanks and Cheers, Patrizzio!

Had a lot of fun this morning, Patrick, thanks for coming along! I thought we would be back before you, but obviously the whole group picked up the pace once we split up! hope you cna join in the bike rides again, and Bill was great to have along too! Colleen and I took Nele, along with Colleens' husband Ernie out for some wine tasting at Red Rooster, then back to town for a nice pizza lunch at Bad Tattoo. a very full day! cheers, Hanneke

Hi Patrick I hope you and your lady are well and enjoying life in the sunny okanagen. We are sorry that we will not be able to attend your wedding anniversary bash, but we are away at yellow point lodge and the we are doing a little tour up island taking the ferry across to Powell river, continuing up to Lund and then driving down the Sunshine Coast.

We are both well, but with an assortment of minor ailments, and even the "Iron Lady" is showing signs of wear and tear and was up half the night nursing a sore knee. She hobbled off early this morning on grand parenting duty so I hope she will be ok. I am playing golf regularly, albeit poorly, but can always use my bionic knees as an excuse, but with my new plastic eyes I can at least see the ball very clearly. The cataract surgery has been quite amazing for me after sixty years of wearing specs.

Our trip to sandy beach lodge is looming in June , but I think you said you will not be in penticton, we are there from the 19th to 26 June. Cheers for now. Mick

Hi Bionic, 20-20 Vision Man and Iron Lady! Sorry you will miss our anniversary bash. Please pass along best wishes to The Usual Suspects! Disappointed, as well, that we will miss you when up for Sandy Beach Lodge holiday. You are most welcome to stay here, beforehand, for as long as you would like, if that works for you. We can either leave a key somewhere or give you back door code, or both, if you decide you might like to be in Penticton for a bit. Certainly look forward to seeing you both at some point, perhaps in mid-July when we are in Vancouver for Folk Fest weekend. Had Ted Keating here on Sunday night as he is golfing all this week with his brother and other friends from Winnipeg/Edmonton. Anyway, let us know what you think and we'll plan accordingly. Must away as we are hosting bridge shortly. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hello,, Jack Rabbit Gilliana and Patrizzio .. sorry won't be able to make it tomorrow.. got a couple of things I need to do.. so have a great ride.. will talk to you next week.. perhaps a ride next Tuesday or Wednesday next week... cheers Bad Boy..

Hi Marilyn, Thanks for the phone message you left explaining that there was no web link when you and Hope entered the Granfondo in the past. Thanks also for putting this matter on the agenda for tomorrow's meeting. As you said, Susan (our treasurer) might know how to deal with people wanting to donate online. So hopefully, Corinne will be able to take an answer home after the meeting. See you tomorrow morning, Marilyn. Cheers, Marian

Hi Patrizzio, I absolutely loved your pix!!!!! ...And, was wondering if you could shoot me off a few via email as I'm having trouble uploading any of them from FLICKR. It looks like I may have to open a YAHOO account to do that?

The pics I would like (when you have time, of course) are the one of me standing with Giants Head in the background, the pic of Marion and I, and all the group photos. Pretty please and thank-you, when you have a moment.

I really enjoyed that hike and am thinking of going again when my son is up here on May long weekend...that is, if I can find my way again 🤔 Bye for now
And thanks again for taking such great pictures!! Sharon aka sokanaganprincess
